Nitpicking Knight of the Phoenix
Hi everyone! I really enjoy watching Knight Rider once for fun and then again to nitpick it. I know that drives some people up a wall but if that's the case, you can just avoid my posts. Not only do I like the obvious "goofs" but the plot contrivances as well. Here are some from "Knight of the Phoenix" with the times next to them. Let me know what you think!
(2:00) – The band in Pink is definitely not singing the music that you actually hear.
(2:34) – Whoever is playing Michael Long sure sounds a lot like David Hasselhoff
(3:13) – So, COMTRON’s top secret information is kept in a manila folder in a hotel room safe?
(4:20) – Wilson tells Lonnie to “head east out of town. We’ll pick up the film from you there.” Do they already have a rendezvous point set-up? How does she know where to go? It seems like pretty vague instructions!
(4:42) – Tanya seems overly concerned with Charles carrying his chips up to the room! They’re already at the elevator and no one seems to be after him.
(5:53) – OK, Muntzy gets shot out in the open and nobody sees it? I realize its dark but come on, this is a Vegas Parking lot and there are people all over the place!

I dont know if your being sarcastic or not... but if you are serious... Its whats called a voiceover.(2:34) – Whoever is playing Michael Long sure sounds a lot like David Hasselhoff
The secrets they were stealing in the beginning wernt from Comtron but from another computer company.

Good Point - Michael Long also encourages Mr. Acton to cash in his chips, you'd think he'd want Mr. Acton to get upstairs right away, I guess he didn't care since Muntzy had already told him that Lonnie had split.

I did realize that it was a voiceover - just pointing out that it obviously wasn't that actor's voice.
And I admit that I did not realize that the company Tanya was stealing secrets from was not COMTRON - but it all makes sense now. Thanks!
More Nitpicks
(6:40) – Coincidence I guess that Michael Long has a Black Trans Am.
(7:54) – While you can’t clearly see his face that is Michael Knight, not Michael Long.
(8:53) – Michael falls with his head towards the driver’s side of the car, but as the helicopter approaches, he is lying with his head towards the passenger side and then it flips again as the scene changes.
(9:00) – As the helicopter lands, Wilton Knight says “My God, we’re too late.” Too late for what? How does he know what just happened? Was he just flying around looking for people who just may have been shot in the face? He’s at least feet away, how does he know if he’s too late?

I think I can answer the last one. Wilton already had hand-picked Michael Long as KITT's driver (which was why KITT was programmed to protect and only respond to Michael). Wilton was also being targeted by Tonya's gang, which is probably why they were on the case as well. Which is why Wilton probably knew of the meeting place. I don't remember if they said who Tonya and her gang were steeling secrets from when Michael was shot. Could that have been Knight Industries?

Re: Nitpicking Knight of the Phoenix
Though it's never explained on-screen, the show explaination is that's what Michael Long's voice sounded like. The doctor that made him Michael Knight could change his face, but they couldn't change his vocal cords, hence the actor that played Long had to be dubbed over with Hasselhoff's voice.Nitpicker wrote:

However the dubbing is pretty bad. Lipsync is *slightly* off and Hasselhoff's voice is waaay too loud to be coming out of the actor's mouth--it's not open enough to get that much volume.
Fuzzie- I think in the book, someone mentioned (I think it was Devon) that Knight Industries had been ripped off by Tanya or someone similar to her.

Concerning the point that the doctor couldn't change Michael's vocals, this is the exact reason why I don't respond well to the Garthe character.
Sure, his voice sounds a bit more deep and huskier but you can plainly tell it's still like Michael's.
They really should have got a different actor to dub the lines for Garthe, I think.

A new Nitpick
I have enjoyed all the responses to my nitpicking so far. I hope people continue to read the posts. Here is a new one from Knight of the Phoenix.
(10:20) – Whoa, whoa, whoa, how do you like the explanation of why Michael Long isn’t dead after a shot to the face? Michael has a metal plate in his head? First of all, it seems that anyone who had a metal plate in their head and got shot would have a big dent in their head. Second, if the metal plate deflected the bullet and it came out through Michael’s face, it seems it would have done more damage. Third, all this is being explained after Michael has been there 4 days! You’d think they’d have this discussion right away. Finally, this is some doctor! Not only does he take care of Wilton Knight but he is apparently the best plastic surgeon in the world!

It seems he was there for some weeks after the bandages were removed, but I'm not sure how long he was there before that.
What has always bothered me was when the doctor remarks to Wilton something like "we'd never know what he'll look like" after explaining that the bullet came out through his face. The sad way he says it sounds as if he is afraid Michael will look permanently disfigured. This always sounded to me like they had no idea how he would turn out after healing, and though they might've tried to patch him up a bit to look more normal, the way Michael ended up looking was by chance. The doctor even appears surprised afterwards (I would be too if a gunshot to the face victim woke up looking like David Hasselhoff). Though it would be absurd to think Michael's face would heal so perfectly on its own (but not entirely far-fetched, as this is TV land after all, and he did just happen to have a metal plate in his head to deflect the bullet!), they never explicitly mention his face was purposely altered until the 2nd season (though it could be said to be hinted at with Devon's conversation with Wilton on the terrace, and when he tells Wilton that Michael bears a resemblance to Wilton as a young man). All of this makes me wonder if the plastic surgery was a plot device that was added afterwards in order for the first Garthe episode to make sense. They certainly made such after-the-fact changes with "A Good Knight's Work" by retroactively making Cameron Zachary the supposed mastermind of the pilot episode, though the producers obviously had no idea of this at the time of the pilot episode. It was easy to go back and say there was another villain even higher than Wilson and Tanya without violating continuity (though it is pretty convenient). But I've always wondered if the plastic surgery was planned from the start. The doctor's line always threw me off.

When I first saw the actor who did the part of Michael Long before David Hasselhoff stepped in, I thought the behind the scenes guys gave DH a great makeup job!
I really did!
I know that that's not the case, but I thought it was for the longest time.
Also, I thought somebody else portrayed Garthe Knight, not DH himself, too.....
These are my observations, nothing else....

That doctor's line always bugged me, too. Did Michael Long not have a driver's license?! No wallet? Pictures? How can Wilton Knight single this guy out, watch him for months, then find him in the desert without ever knowing what he looked like?! How would he know who to look for if they didn't know who to look for?finalfadeout wrote:What has always bothered me was when the doctor remarks to Wilton something like "we'd never know what he'll look like" after explaining that the bullet came out through his face. In regards to the plastic surgery idea being added after the fact, I don't think this was the case. I think the only part of that which was added later was in Season 2 where they said that Michael's face was modeled after Garthe Knight. His face went from being created using World War II photographs of Wilton to being modeled after Garthe. I just explain it by saying that Garthe looks nearly identical to how Wilton looked when he was younger.
The doctor was a billionare's own personal doctor, but Wilton had an entire medical team as well. I don't really find the part about them being able to perform plastic surgery that hard to believe.
