My thoughts of the first season

Post by Lupus » Tue Mar 17, 2009 2:46 pm

A couple of weeks ago, Knight Rider aired in Swedish television and of pure curiosity I decided to watch it. It seem it got me hooked pretty well, at least enough to make me watch it the next Wednesday. Watching the series was a weekly event until last week when I started to download the rest of the episodes (7 - 17), since I couldn't wait any longer. I have never seen the Knight Rider from 1982, so my perspective isn't affected by earlier stories.

Although the action and tense in the series makes it cool and exciting, my absolutely favourite part in the show is how the advanced AI program in KITT develops throughout the series. It is really a journey from a talking car that follows order to a person with "real" feelings and a free will. The philosophical question the writers have included in this storyline is indeed really interesting. What makes one a person... a human being? Something makes us able to think beyond daily routines like building a nest, collect food and eat. What happens if a technical component is programmed to develop his own thoughts, memories and feelings? Things that makes us individuals.

KITT is certainly aware of his being, a fact that is proved in episode 06, where he refused to let the team download his hardware. It wouldn't bring back the real KITT, the car we have seen from the first little attempt to make a joke, to fearing the death. In every episode we may witness small sequences of character development and each of them seem to follow a specific theme, like humor, love, fear, trust, friendship etc.

I do love this series, however, I would like to see more private and personal conversations with KITT. The series have a lot of potential to investigate in the way a robot's thoughts are developing. I look forward to that day Mike realises his car really has feelings, even though I'm quite surprised he still haven't seen that.

I like the way progressed too. my wife and I always wait for KITT to see how much HE developed since the last adventure. the way KITT and Michel talk together -specialy in the latest episods after the reboot- is what really attracts me -maybe others as well-
its this amazing relation between man and his machine, talking, playing, laughing and sometimes trick each other. like when KITT refused to let go of the seat built on the last episod.
That is what sits KR apart from any other show that tried to duplicate the idea. I think mostly we will see more of one-on-one private talks in season 2. when the relationship between Michel and KITT get even deeper.
Remember in the last episod when Michel asked KITT to trust hum and not to have any thing secret from him? That was amazing, the only thing missing from that picture was having a high five at the end!!!
anyway, I am waiting for season 2 to be on the air soon so we all can have a nice time on board KITT Image :kitt:

Yes, I also love that part with the trusting. In fact I like all scenes where KITT says something that isn't programmed, when it is personal instead. I'm glad at least one here appreciate that side of the series. :)

Hopefully there will be a season 2 and then as you say, they will have time do get a deeper relationship. I have read around in this forum, and it seems Knight Rider is very close of being shut down. It sucks when you don't have the same interest as the rest of the worlds population... or rather the Americans, because they never care of what the rest of the world thinks.
