Well the jumps and other stunts where certainly a major part of the show. Seeing Kitt do stuff is why we tuned in every week.

The new show doesn't have to be a carbon copy of the old show, in fact if it where, it would already be off air.
I don't think desert or jackets have any major role in the popularity of the show.

The important thing this show needs to change is it's focus. It needs to move away from the relationships angle and focus on Micheal and Kitt doing missions. And fortunately it seems like this is where the show is heading, so sit back and enjoy the ride.

"I wanted to do The Lone Ranger with a car", Larson said in The Last Great Ride. "Kind of a sci-fi thing, with the soul of a western." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight_Rider_(1982_TV_series" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

That was the essence of the original, not just the jumps and the jacket and the desert. It was the atmosphere, and this quote accurately portrays the TOS episodes that I have seen. I don't know if the new show would benefit from this, but I do agree that it does need a core theme to build upon. If the show gets a central theme, a lot of the writing will fall into place (via a master rule set; things KI3T can do, things KI3T can't do, the show formula) and we won't have plotholes and arbitrary KI3T abilities.

There was a thread somewhere on this board about a list of rules that the writers for TOS used for KI2T....like, KI2T only drives himself when Michael is specifically doing something else, like playing a game or car-surfing to save the fair damsel. I don't remember the others, but a set of guidelines would probably make for better, less lazy, writing.
