Knight Rider's KITT for saleBy staff wires and writers
April 04, 2007 01:00am

KITT, the real star of the American '80s TV show Knight Rider is for sale.

Short for Knight Industries Two Thousand, the modified black 1982 Pontiac Trans Am which was clever enough to shoot back sarcastic one-liners its driver Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff) has been restored to its debut-season glory and is on offer for $US149,995 ($185,500) at a California car dealership.

Johnny "Vette" Verhoek of Kassabian Motors has had the car on display for about a month.

The car belongs to Tim Russo, a customer of Kassabian Motors who has spent the past 10 years restoring KITT. He decided it was time to test the market with the 25th anniversary of Knight Rider not far away.

Mr Verhoek said KITT could not achieve the 483km/h speeds it reached on the show, or soar through the air and throw car bombs. It also can't drive or talk.

However, the red scanner light on KITT'S nose still glows and makes a humming noise.

Mr Verhoek said KITT wasn't legal to drive because of missing smog equipment and other modifications.

"Whoever buys the car will probably keep it in a private collection or it may be purchased by a museum," he said.

KITT was voiced by US actor William Daniels, who played Dr Mark Craig in St. Elsewhere.

Knight Rider ran for 90 episodes from 1982 to 1986.

And when things appeared to get better, they got worse, and everyday was a day to cry.

That's cool! The fact that it's one of the original cars used for the show. Whoever buys that is buying an iconic piece of history that is quite arguably the greatest TV show in history, in my opinion.
