KITT judged favourite customised car

Hi There Fellow Knight Riders!

This was posted in the New Zealand Herald Website
on Monday 27th June 2005 (NZ time).

KITT judged favourite customised car.
27.06.05

KITT, the souped-up Pontiac Trans-Am that vied with actor David Hasselhoff
for the limelight in the 1980s television series Knight Rider,
was judged Britain's favourite customised car by MTV viewers.

The low-slung, blacked-out Knight Industries Two Thousand,
which could talk, travel at 480kp/h and leap 15m in the air,
beat the Batmobile into second place and left James Bond's
Aston Martin DB5 eating its dust in third.

*************************************************************

I was a BIG fan of KR back in the 80’s, when it aired here
in New Zealand through Television New Zealand (TVNZ)
on TV2 (we usually got all the big hits shows from the US).

It’s had repeat screenings here on SKY 1 (SKY Television)
and also on TV4 (which is now a music channel called C4)
and also TV3 (TV3 & TV4/C4 are sister networks) in recent years.

I’ve got a KITT with the top which has a hole in it for
the T-BAR to put in a zip the car across the room.

I’ve also had a my photo taken in KITT with my younger
brother when KITT was brought out to New Zealand back
in 1986. He was taken to the small town of Edgecumbe here
in the Eastern Bay Of Plenty (about 15 mins from where I live)
for a couple of days during one of the school holidays for kids
to come and see him and have their photos taken in sitting in
the drivers seat at Riverslea Mall in Edgecumbe.
(Then a few months later we had a big earthquake in the region).

I went to Los Angeles back in June/July 1988 and saw KITT
on display at Universal Studios – but the line was real long
and we didn't have time to join in but Dad took some photos.
Is he still there?

I’ve got the Best Of KR – the 2 DVD set plus the Season 1 DVD set.

I can’t wait for Season 2 on DVD. Does anyone know when it will be
available in New Zealand (Region 4). TV3 is playing some episodes
of Season 2 now but that finishes on Friday this week.

It's nice to see K.I.T.T. coming in first place. Again, it's surprising that he even beat the Batmobile, which, in my opinion, would be the only car that could be worthy of beating KITT in popularity. My theory is that Batman isn't as popular in New Zealand as he is in America because he's an American super-hero. That's probably the same reason KITT beat the General Lee (assuming that was on the list because it always seems to be), because a show about two hicks riding around in a car with a Confederate flag probably isn't as meaningful anywhere else as it is in America. Knight Rider seems to have more of a universal appeal.

Thanks Lost Knight. It was a BRITISH survey for this not a NZ survey but I think all 3 cars and shows are popular in NZ as we got and still do get most of the big hit shows from both the US and the UK. I use to get in and out of our cars at home through the window when I was younger. Back in the 60's and early 70's (until 1975) NZ only had ONE television channel so everybody watched EVERYTHING back then.

The General Lee isn't really customized though, unless you consider welding the doors shut cutomization :P
Michael: "KITT! Where are ya?!"
K.I.T.T.: "I'm in your parking space, Michael, where else would I be?"
