KITT's 'Birth'
Hey everyone, I was watching Goliath Returns again and realized that KITT said that he first came online in a mainframe in Washington. That was really odd, I always assumed KITT was created at the labs at Knight Industries. Hmmm...that means KITT's program process had to be halted and copied over to his own CPU to be put in the car.
Just another thing new I learned and can add to my vast knowledge of KR facts. Just thought I would point it out to everyone else.

It was the scene where the scientist and his niece are in the car the first time with Michael and KITT is explaining his start. It is as Michael is taking them back to the hotel and dropping them off, and I think it is right after the scene where Garth is talking about taking care of the 'insult to his existance' and Adrianne is telling him to get over it. It is near the beginning on the two part.
That is odd that KITT was developed for military use, I always assumed that he was developed by Knight Industries for use in the K2000 Car, as an updated and 'fixed' version of the AI after the KARR mishap.

Remember, Tonya and gang were after Wilton so he had to hide quick, and get Michael, but Michael was near killed so even KITT being built as Devon said, was a rush job at first. So Devon probably got ahold of a friend who was able to get KITT's AI to them as a quick effort, since all Knight Industries actually had was KARR's AI which was known to be a failure and so they had no hope to reprogram it.
But, it IS interesting that KITT turned out so altruistic for a military AI and KARR didn't but was not created for military use.
Devon also said something that Wilton was approached by the military over KARR but he refused because he didn't believe in violence.
It just is an inconsistancy. I too can't see how KITT could have been developed for military use. Maybe it's this:
KARR was develop for non-violent use, but it wasn't "him" - didn't suit his personality.
Meanwhile, KITT was developed for violent use, but it didn't suite "him". KITT luckily got a home which fit his actual personality. KARR didn't get so lucky, because Wilton refused.
Or something...

It sounds like a case of PCR (Post-Creative Rationalization) where new story elements are made up and added later in the series. Unfortunately this method usually leads to inconsistencies with previously established facts in many television shows.
I'll have to check the episode out myself to see what they're talking about. Nice catch!

The novelization for Trust Doesn't Rust states that KARR was developed as a new war tool after Vietnam ended. However, as the 70s dragged on Wilton decided he was of more use at home. According to that novelization KARR was in developement for quite some time. Makes since that KITT went quicker as most of the worked had already been done on KARR.
The novelization doesn't count as cannon, but it does offer more insight into KITT and KARR than the series did.

KITT project is on again!

I've oftened wondered about that myself.
I always thought KARR should have been built into a Bandit T/A rather than an 82 like KITT, but it was cheaper to make him just like KITT.
I imagine according to the novel that KARR was intended for a tank or other fighting vehicle. That would be kind of cool.

I just saw Goliath Returns last night and noticed KITT never mentioned he was used for 'military' use. Just that he was actually came online in a mainframe in Washington and that the "government beaurocracy" didn't suit him. It could be he could have been an AI computer at first to handle government payroll checks, or disability forms or other things of that nature, and maybe not even military use at all. Or might even been used as a central information system like the IRMA computer on Race For Life. They kinda left that vague, which probably was a good thing.
