Bally, seeing that this is your first post (and I assume you have just started on "Knight Rider"), here's some info.
The name of the car in the show is the Knight Industries Two Thousand, KITT for short.
For the cars they used in production to make over to look like KITT were 1982-1985 Pontiac Trans-Am (this may include the Trans-Am Firebird line as well, but I'm not really sure myself).

I actually remember Glen A. Larson mentioning in the commentary of the "Knight of the Phoenix" that the car was actually called "Knight 2000" and only the A.I. processor was actually called Knight Industries Two-Thousand aka KITT.
I remember thinking by myself why there was "Knight 2000" written in red in many Knight Rider toy cars. I guess that's why.

Actually, (now that I feel bad for such a silly answer *I* gave
) If you go to the Knight Rider WIKI you can find a lot of information about the car and other Knight Rider information:
http://www.knightrideronline.com/wiki/doku.php
Toni- That is some useful info! Maybe add that to the WIKI?
I hadn't realized that there were actually TWO names for the car.
Brings to mind another question then: What was KARR's car called? If KARR's CPU was the "Knight Automated Roving Robot"? Actually wouldn't that be the whole car?

I've been trying to find out the difference! You wouldn't belive how hard it is to pound an answer out of some Firebird websites.Army_F_Body wrote:You mean Firebird Trans Am? Firebird is the model, Trans Am is the trim line.
A Trans Am is a high end Firebird

*reads Fuzzie's post* Hah!
