KRO gets a Wiki

Post by neps » Tue Apr 05, 2005 11:55 pm

As we celebrate our tenth anniversary this month, we will unveil a series of changes, giveaways and surprises. The first thing that I want to introduce everyone to is a Wiki.

First off, what is a Wiki?
A Wiki or wiki (pronounced [wɪki], [wiki] or [viki]; is a website that allows users to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content. "Wiki" also refers to the collaborative software used to create such a website (see Wiki software).

Wiki (with an upper case 'W') and WikiWikiWeb are both used to refer specifically to the Portland Pattern Repository, the first-ever wiki. This usage's proponents suggest a lower-case 'w' for wikis in general. The name was based on the Hawaiian term wiki wiki, meaning "quick" or "super-fast". Sometimes wikiwiki or WikiWiki are used instead of wiki
from wikipedia.org

So I was looking at the content on the site as it currently stands, and I was thinking of ways to improve things. I realized that the atoz and the faq are both outdated versions of itself. I wanted to change this, by merging them into something better. This is where a wiki comes in. By using this wiki, not only is the content up to date, but it puts the accuracy of the content into the hands of the community, because you get to take part in improving it. It becomes the communities resource, kinda like this forum, instead of one persons words.

I ask that you guys give it a whirl. It may fail miserably, it might be a pleasant success. But it may be alot of fun. I've pre populated it with the data from the atoz and the faq, so there is a start. If you see things that are missing in it, go right ahead and add it, but be cautious to be accurate and site your sources. For now please keep content to the official content, we'll think together about how to add fan fiction content in later.

You use your board registration information in order to be able to edit, a nice little security feature. You can also upload images that are less than 200k in size, so be considerate of your fellow downloaders. Also please try and use unique naming for the file names, like attach your username to the end of it, so we can keep track of things a bit.

Remember, what happens to this and where it goes is really up to you guys. I don't own it, it's everyones if you want it. Also, it needs a name. KRO Wiki just doesn't pop. I'd appreciate some suggestions on that. And we'll vote on the top responses.

Oh, address!

Thanks everyone and I hope you enjoy!

PS: If you are uncertain how to use wiki, check out this page for syntax guides: http://www.knightrideronline.com/wiki/d ... iki:syntax
Also if you are afraid of mucking things up, try out wiki on the playground first: http://www.knightrideronline.com/wiki/d ... playground

PPS: Everything in the Wiki is version tracked and logged by user name. You'll be able to see what everyone has changed to the character, and people will be able to see the same about you. This is a fall safe incase something is changed, but it also should make you vigilant about being accurate.

Knight of the living Wiki? Naw...

I never cared for Wiki's but this one since it's Knight Rider, I'll give it a whirl. I hope it takes off. There's quite a few knowledgeable people on the board.

And happy 10th anniversary! :)

Ok, I've created the page on Paul Frees, and updated the page on KARR. :) I'll poke around a bit tonight with it and then see what else I can do. Maybe I'll visit for a few nights and every so often and see what I can add to it that I know of.

Nice start though! :)

I also noticed that when you click on a link in a topic, it says the page isn't created yet but the page is there if you find it in the index.

I appreciate you giving it a whirl FuzzieDice, even if it isn't exactly you thing. Thanks for your additions they are great!

What I think you are talking about is Aliasing. Since there are many options for a character sometimes, you may think there isn't a page when there is. If you find this happening, we should do like a See Also: type system.

So for it, is it K.I.T.T. or KITT? Each is different. Is it Bonnie or Bonnie Barstow? Each goes to a different page. So for instance for Bonnie I put a "See Also: Bonnie Barstow" so that way it still links, but hopefully the data will stay on one page.

Happy anniversary/birthday Neil.

Thanks also for the Wiki, I'll go and check it out later when I'm done here.

(PS, this is easily the best Knight Rider website in webland.)

You're welcome! :) Hopefully I'll have more to do after I can get some time to do them. I have a pile of work to do this week, and new model kits (see my new post about a Bandit in the lounge!!! :) and warmer weather means work on my car.

But like I say, I'm trying the Wiki because I love KR and this could be something really cool! :) I just never understood how to 'do wiki' is all. Now please don't tell my boss or he'll want me to write a tutorial on how to install, configure and use Wiki (I can see it coming... especially if I get too addicted to Wikis :) )

Probably. I don't know the WIKI system too well. But I did figure out how to make a link. Also I found some DO work. You are right about the spelling being important. I am slowly learning that.

I also love how you integrated it with the site layout. :)
