Cool, thanks. I don't plan to paint major areas. I plan on painting the wheel wells silver on K.A.R.R., the front fender vents gloss black, the rims flat black (after seeing your pics lol), and the front reflectors mustard yellow. For K.I.T.T. I plan on using black electrical tape to cover the amber lenses (there's only supposed to be 4 lights with no bumper grills anyway). The only problem with that is that the lights will look off-center. On KARR though I haven't figured out what to do about the extra lights (they're not amber but there's only supposed to be 4 lights as well) because the tape won't camoflage against the silver paint.

You don't have to paint the fender vents on the Aoshima KARR, they are already painted gloss black unlike ERTL's. Using a real hobby silver paint pen will make your job of painting KARR's wheel wells a breeze, when compared to brush painting. Good Luck on your conversion!! :D

don't get too excited. i got my tracking # the day he told me it had shipped out and it showing the same thing you are getting about the billing but no indication of drop off or shipment.
apparently you can generate a shipping arrangement with UPS via the web or a phone call but until the item is physically picked up by UPS or dropped off at UPS,the tracking info will not move into the next phase until UPS has the item in their possession. i was told my item was shipped on the 5th. i also received the tracking # that day but it said what yours is currently saying now. UPS did not actually receive my item until the 11th.until it shows that yours is "in transit" , that means he did not send it.
the seller is "diecastmart". he is a liar and also doesn't return emails. DO NOT BUY FROM HIM and make the same mistake a few of us already have. he will be getting negative feedback from me and probably a few of you too. if he wants to leave negative feedback for me,so be it. i paid instantly by paypal, expected him to live up to his word and got lied to. i did everything a great buyer does.i have copies of his email in which he lied about sending it. if he leaves negative feedback for me,i will just dispute it with ebay. i am tired of turning the other cheek when it comes to the feedback game. i have done it in the past to avoid jeopardizing my 100% positive rating but will do it no longer.
as someone said, it is amazing how this guy achieved so many positive feedbacks.
on a happy note, i have received the KITT i originally purchased and am very impressed overall. i will be doing some modifications to make it more correct as some of you have already have done but i have a good starting point.
i have so many custom projects going right now, it isn't even funny.
does anyone here collect other movie / TV diecast cars as well?

Before painting them silver, try to put masking tape on them and paint the tape. If you don't like the outcome, just remove the tape with the paint. You may change your mind because the silver painted lights will not match the other see-through plastic lenses. You might also try painting all of them silver for a perfect match, but I like the see-through lenses a lot for me to apply paint over them. It's really your call.

The only diecast TV cars that I have now are the ERTL KITT and Corgi Black Beauty reissue. There are a lot of TV car diecasts at the store like Christine and the James Bond cars but I really can't afford to buy them.

I also have other ongoing projects, like a 1/400 scale Titanic model by Minicraft. I bought the kit back in 2000 and I only started on it two years ago. I am still building it bit by bit, occasionally straying from it to accomodate smaller projects (such as modifying KITT).

I just purchased my Ertl KITT yesterday. I bought it from http://www.diecastfast.com. I got it for $27.99 plus $8.34 for shipping and handling. Has anyone here used this site or is everbody just using Diecast Muscle? I hope this is a reliable site. I don't want the car to be damaged when it arrives. I'll find out in a few days.

Well I've finally finished doing the turn-signal blackouts. I discarded the thin paper cardboard cutouts and used black electrical tape instead. It wasn't easy, I had to cut the tape with a sharp cutter and ruler so that the edges would be straight. It took me around five to six tries per side to get it right, I wouldn't recommend the process for the faint of heart, but it does make the model look better....IMO. When you guys get your models and decide for a conversion, please share your tips and pics here. :)

I don't even have the model yet, but I've already been thinking how clear plastic or tape would look like as a turnsignal covers?
Has anyone ever done any modifications to the metal in diecast models? I was just wondering how big job it would be to actually carve the metal lower in the frontnose where the turnsignal indentations should be. Of course the carved areas or maybe even the whole frontnose should be repainted after that.
Well... I should just get the model in my hands first

Edit:
Wow, the black tape certainly makes the frontnose look much better, I think I'd be happy with that modification.
(Didn't saw the pic when I 1st posted this, had too tight image settings in my Firefox)

It turns out that the simplest idea seems to work the best. I can't believe it didn't occur to me to use the electrical tape for the blackouts since I thought of covering the amber lenses. Are you going to paint over the tape with black gloss paint, HondaSiR, or is flat black the better choice for more accuracy? It's too bad Ertl made the lights incorrect as it's a shame because they actually look too nice to cover up.

I haven't done anything like that since I don't really modify diecast cars (KITT is somewhat special :) ) But you do have a good idea. Perhaps somebody here can give us tips on how to pull it off...somehow.

The electrical tape itself is colored black, with a somewhat matt finish. It looks great just the way it is and I won't paint over it anymore (although it is possible to brush paint it gloss black, I'll leave that up to someone else to try out first  ).

Yup, those are my exact thoughts too about those lenses. They look too nice to alter, that's the reason I suggested that we try to cover them with tape before painting. And they look superior to Aoshima's!

I like what you've done to the rims with the black paint - I'll do that to mine I think. I'm happy with the model as it is though - no way am I touching the lamps or putting tape all over it.

i don't understand all these big changes ppl are doing to it. sure, i maybe thinking of modifying the fog light since that is an actual fault, but doing this and that is goin a bit too far, IMO.

just recognise for what it is. a model that *represents* kitt.

I can't speak for the others here, but for an obsessive-compulsive perfectionist, any inaccuracies that can be modified I just can't leave alone without trying to fix. Modifying the models is almost like an art form and the more true to the show it is, the more I will enjoy owning it. Some people like the models as they are, some feel the need to modify them. To each, their own.

I have also done some modifications at the model, as painted black rims and I printed the picture of the voice modulator on a little sticker, which fits perfectly between the yellow and red buttons. Looks realy nice! I am going to post some pics as soon as possible.

I've only done some very minor changes, nothing major really. The rims really beg to be painted because they don't match that of the show. And KITT just has to have those turn signal blackouts, its part of his design. I'm through with the changes as of now, I don't want to overdo it.
knightrider2004 wrote:can we pick these up in like a toys r us or something?
Supposedly...yes...but somehow there is a problem with distribution so there is somewhat of a shortage. As a result, many people have bought it online. If you happen to see it in a store, don't think twice, grab it!
