Ever think KITT was real?
Just out of curiosity.... I was replying to a thread about Alien vs Predator in the Lounge, and this thought came across me when thinking about believability in tv/movies...
I was wondering how many of you, for any period of time when you first saw the series, thought KITT was real? I must confess that I used to think that Max Headroom was actually a Computer rendered thing (whether AI or not I can't remember) but I never thought it to be a human in make up.
I know the people behind the series tried their best to make it seem like something that exists, but did anyone actually fall for it, if you can remember that far back?

well for one thing is that were very close to KITTS AI . while not completly detailed and human like as him , i here there are come robots from Sony i heard that dances talks and even replies to you . with a human type voice .
and remember wwe already got voice command for a few cars today and in the future it might beable to do even more for you .
as we get better processers the better the potential for the AI will be .
but ill be at least 25- 30 years old or more by that time probaly . eek

and if you think about it, the possibility for cars driving themselves arent too far off either. just think about it, there are plenty of computer driving gmes out now that the cars follow a specified path. only thing that needs to be done for this to be possible is to have alot of not all roads in atleast the US to be mapped out and accurate down to a 1' margin of error. that is the major part. having the cars follow this wouldnt be that hard to do. as a matter of fact I remember seeing a story on Techlive where either nissan or honda has a prototype car that will actually parallel park itself. so that is definitely a good step towards self driving cars.

In my opinion KITT's AI is one of the the things we are furtherest away from! Yes we do have some AI today, but KITT's AI is extremely advanced. He didn't just respond to voice commands, and responds to your voice... KITT's AI had the abiltiy to learn, to grow, to almost have feelings, to know who you are, to be able to inact with all of the Knight 2000's systems, to be able to understand, to interact with a large data base to give information based on vebal input. KITT's AI can understand a full range of speach. You see, the user doesn't have to use certain words or phases as with some robots and AIs, KITT could understand slang, etc. KITT under stould MK's no matter what! KITT was just like a real person, with a real brain!dragonball1957 wrote:well for one thing is that were very close to KITTS AI . while not completly detailed and human like as him , i here there are come robots from Sony i heard that dances talks and even replies to you . with a human type voice .

Now I am sure by the time were older AI's will be a lot better, and more intelligent, however it maybe a long time to we see a KITT AI... Oh well

We...do not....have....AI.
I will say it again, and I will continue to say it to ANYBODY who keeps coming up with that statement.
The cute little Honda Robots, are not AI. They are robotic systems, a lot of which do not really act upon their own. They are given everything, they don't learn a thing. We are no where near any form of AI in the public right now. (Military...quite a different thing.)
Benjamin is on the right path listing the items that it would take to create 'KITT's AI' in fact, that is some of the items that is required for any type of AI. (And before anybody comes forth with 'how do you know' and jumps down my throat again about this, I AM a specialist in the AI field, that used to be my main area of specialty - Computer Engineering with a focus on AI development.)
So the proper way to put this; (yet once again, for the umpteenth time...) When we get older, AI will be real. Mike will say it is many moons down the road, I say it is a little sooner, but both of us, as will many others who do know the true definition of AI, will generally agree on, we don't have AI.

They now have cars that can parallel park themselves. Some have the auto navigation (GBS) with the voice. How much longer do you think an KITT AI would take to make and perfect.Benjamin Knight wrote:In my opinion KITT's AI is one of the the things we are furtherest away from! Oh no... I wasn't attempting to reduce KITT to that. I was just saying if it took this long to get certain things accomplished, how much longer would it take to make an actual AI. I don't have a clue how much would go into one, but with all the technological advances between the early 80s til now, I can see some strides toward making an actual learning, thinking AI.knightimmortal wrote:Is that all that we have reduced KITT's AI (or any AI) down to? If it can park itself and talk back? That's not AI, that's a function. A pre-established set of codes that do not get modified for more than a pre-determined set of situations.

And I would agree, those things I mentioned is not an AI function, but I think back to the early 80s and I would have never thought I would be seeing such funtions today.

Back in the 80's, we were light years away from AI, but the thought processes were there. Since then, we have brought it a lot closer to the reality of such, but we are still at least a decade, if not more (*watches as Mike jumps up and down in victory *) away from actual AI. These evoluationary jumps, like the robot, the cars that can park themselves, the vocal integration, are all similar to the evolutionary jump of the HD TV, the cell phone, the digital radio have provided, and before that, their less digital predicessors.
There are strides, and we are on a fast track towards it. We as the general public will probably be decades away from seeing it. The Military is playing with the better stuff, but you are right, we are making the strides. Just slower than most people would want.
