Well I’m no car expert but I know that my brother had to install those kind of hood pins into his demolition derby cars. So my guess would be this is a stunt car that has its hood tied down for safety.

Yeah, hat's a hood pin, had them on my crappy old car for some reason.
The new and again improved evil's advertisement is currently too long and too badass to display here. But let's just say that with now 50% more evil, this **** is great!

Weird that it only had the one though huh?
The following shot from that one shows the full hood, and it only has the one hood pin. you would expect one on each side normally wouldn't you?

Maybe that particular car had minor crash damages, the headlight cover is bent and the bodypanels aren't aligned very well so perhaps the original hood lock mechanism isn't aligned/working either and the hood must've been secured with that pin. If I remember correctly the stance of the car was not normal either, the rear end was deeper down than the front, maybe it was turboboosted once and for some reason it had to be used in this close-up scene as well.

As far as I remember, it was a small console to affix a camera for the "Kitt's point of view" shots...

Yeah, now that you guys have mentioned it, that's probably what it actually is, especially since there doesn't seem to be a actual pin in there.

Yes that seems like a rather logical explanation to me too.
Though either way it is odd that they didn’t use the hero car for that scene, unless they were shooting with two different units to save time.

That could also be a pryo mount(bullet ricochet sparks). Because if you watch KITT pull away when he goes after Michael the hood is full of them, the suspension is dropped and i could have sworn i see a roll cage. I am not on my home PC so I cannot post a capture.

There was a small hole on the hood for the "driver" to steer KITT when KITT was driving himself so perhaps it was that?
On the flipside, for that particular scene, the cars windows were tinted so the driver was probably in the driver's seat to achieve the turbo boost over the road work.

Why did they need a hole in the hood for a second steering control inside the car?

Yes, it is a camera mount for sure !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have seen pictures of the different methods they mounted cameras......... in the early days when they didn't have to many cars to go around, they packed pads on the cars to mount the needed not to dent the cars.
If you caught "Trust doesn't Rust" you can catch on KITT's hood scoop a dent left from a camera.
