ALL THE TIME OR WHEN NEEDED

Alright, we all know the scanner is the most recognizable part of KITT. Hell, street racers the world over put similar lights on their cars. Now, as fans have noticed in the earlier seasons, the scanner was only on when KITT was using a function or self-driving. Later seasons, it was on all the time.

So my question to you is which way did you prefer; the scanner only on when in use, or the scanner on constantly?

I like it when it is active constantly. I see the scanner as te outer manifestation thet the car actually "lives", so it's good to see it flashing. It's like Kitt's heartbeat...

However, I think whenever K.I.T.T. is parked / at rest, I think it's best if his scanner is off. To remain incognito, I'd say it's a good idea for his "heartbeat" to be hidden when he's not active.

I agree and whenever he's parked, the scanner should be turned off, as sidemachine said and whenever someone aproaches the car the scanner should go back on! To indicate that Kitt is aware...

I figure that the scanner is like KITTs eyes, so if it's on all the time he can see, but if it's off his eyes are shut. I don't like driving around as a passenger in a car with my eyes closed, so I guess the producers thought of that too I like the scanner, it has KR written all over it, so I prefer it on all the time, unless he is parked and not in serveilance mode.

KITT's scanner also seemed like a mood indicator. Like when he zapped Bonnie in the seat when Michael told KITT not to take advantage of her in "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death". Or when they were going to put KITT's CPU in Goliath, KITT's scanner was pulsing, not scanning, as if he was terrified. Then when Michael arrived, KITT's scanner started tracking back and forth normally.

So it could stay off, and that way he could turn it on not just for scanning purposes, but also to get his point across to humans easier. And as mentioned, to let people know he's "aware" and "alive" as it were. It kinda animates him more.

I have seen his scanner "pulse" like that in two episodes, but I believe its not due to him being scared, but rather the angle of the camera. sometimes you get a oulse when your videotaping a tv being on, or computer monitor..i think the same princepal applys with his scanner, that certain angles make the scanner look like its pulsing.

I think the scanner should be always on but when in Survelliance Mode the scanner noise should be also on its like he is trying to find something using sound like some animals do.

I think KITTs/KARRs scanner (KARR II-reworked 85 Camaro Berlinetta )
should be on in cycles....or as needed per a crisis situation....

I like what everyone has said so far. I like it on all the time unless he is trying to remain stealthy. As far as scanner showing moods I also believe that the scanner shows his moods. In episodes where KITT is taking over by someone else the scanner does not work in the same way. I usually has two lights going instead of one.
