Could a 5th season have been planned?

Post by Zeron Hitaro » Wed Apr 12, 2006 5:09 pm

The main reason I think this is because of the KARR plot line and the way it's so open-ended. A lot of good shows from the mid to late 80s and early 90s were canceled because the ratings competition was just too fierce. Plus (may just be reading too much into this) have you noticed how KARR only appeared on odd numbered seasons? (Seasons 1 & 3)If this pattern held true then his next appearace would've been in the potential Season 5.

FYI: To clarify the title, I mean could they have plotted out a 5th season but scrapped it due to show cancelation?

Yeah they could have. They did leave it open for KARR to come back. They leave you with KARR's CPU still blinking, at least that's what I think it is. I am sure there were lost episodes and scripts. Could have been a couple of scripts for season 5 just didn't make it to that point.

There was no "planned" fifth Season of Knight Rider. The network announced that Knight Rider wouldn't be renewed in November, with three months of production for Season 4 still on the slate.

As with any series, there would have been stories that were left untold, and I'm sure that (up to the point of the announcement of cancellation anyway) the production team had ideas and proposals for shows for the following year -- probably the season premiere for one, and maybe a few other stories, but their focus would have been on Season 4. It's a certainty that many, many spec scripts by fans and professionals were still being submitted but never saw the light of day. Some would have been terrible, others may have been terrific. Some of these could have been produced if the series survived -- Season 4 contained some rewritten scripts that were commissioned for Season 3.

I wouldn't place too much significance on K.A.R.R.'s appearance on odd-numbered seasons; Season 3 was seen by the production team as an opportunity to "shake things up", and they attempted to challenge Michael and K.I.T.T. with vehicles that could give K.I.T.T. a run for his money (Dagger-DX, K.A.R.R., the Drones, the Killer Car, etc.), not to mention "Junk Yard Dog". Knight Rider came from a time when episodic TV was exactly that -- every story returned to the status quo, pressed the "reset" button at the end. There certainly weren't any season-long story-arcs, or plots that would run from episode 3-6, and then be picked up again in 9-15. Even Season Finales were a rarity back then.

I hate to say this, but I think Knight Rider ran its course. I'm watchin the 4th season now, and the storylines are definitely weaker than the previous seasons. I think the show peaked in season 2 and 3 was pretty good, but 4 was all downhill.

I just got done watching Season 4 and I enjoyed it. The stories were a bit different, maybe harder-edged than the previous seasons, but I personally enjoyed watching the shows. I wouldn't say "downhill". I do agree that season 3 probably was the best of them but I say that because that's the season KARR came back at his best. :)

I do agree that seasons 1-3 were better than 4. My fav seasons were 2 and 3. Just seems like things changed in season 4 when they changed KITTs apperance and maybe added RC3. Not that I didn't like RC3 just seemed like Michael was now sharing the spotlight with him. It could be me though...hehe.

Michael seemed quite a bit older in the last series and I think it was beginning to become a "team spirit" show with more people involved, RC most so. Before, it was more Michael vs the world aided by necessary people. After, it was a team vs the world. Of course, TKR took this a stage further.

I personally prefered the "one man" bit
