The story begins as in 1949, Michael Arthur Long was born. At the age of 23, he joined the police force at the age of 23 and continued to serve with the police until 1982. In this year, he was assigned to a case about a sting operation involving stolen microchips. Michael's long-time partner, Muntzy was shot, and then Michael was double crossed by Tani Walker and was shot and left for dead.

FLAG rescued Michael, by plastic surgery and was given a new identity, Michael Knight. He was teamed up with the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT), and was made field operative for FLAG from 1982 to 1990. No one must find out about his previous identity, except his friends at the foundation - KITT, Devon miles, bonnie barstow, april curtis and RC3. He left the Foundation in 1990 because he lost his sense of purpose. But has returned to the foundation to assist his old friends.

Michael Knight is very good at what he does. He doesn't play be the rules and he never quits a case, until the criminal is behind bars. Because of this, he and Devon sometimes argue, but they both want the same thing - to put an end to criminals. As for Michael and KITT's relationship, is yet even more complicated.
