Silverman: Knight Rider likely addition to NBC's schedule

| | Comments (44)

In an article published in the New York Times, Ben Silverman was quoted as saying that the success of the picture on Sunday night, means good things for a potential series.

Ben Silverman, the other co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, who will travel the country with Mr. Graboff making the presentations to advertisers, has been an advocate of linking advertisers to shows. He made a deal with Ford Motor Company, for example, to supply the car used in a remake of the 1980s series "Knight Rider." A version of that aired Sunday night on NBC as a made-for-TV movie, and Mr. Silverman said Tuesday that its ratings success makes it a likely addition to NBC's schedule when it is announced in April.

Knight Rider aired this past Sunday on NBC. It attracted 12.7 million viewers and had the highest ratings for the 18-49 demographic in over three years for any channel.

It reairs this Saturday, Feb 23, at 9pm.

I think that the new Knight Rider has a lot of potential to be the next great series of 2008. The original has left a mark in the TV world, and that was 25 years ago and still going. We have yet to see all the new features the new KITT has to offer.

THE MOVIE WAS QUITE GOOD BUT THEY MUST KEEP THE HOFF AT ANY COST. OTHERWISE WITHOUT MICHAEL K N I G H T AND WITH MIKE T R A C E U R ON THE WHEEL THE SHOW HAS TO BE CALLED NOT KNIGHT RIDER BUT TRACEUR RIDER!

Ben said:

If Knight Rider is announced in April I tend to think that people will watch and it will take a year or so to get it's groove going but once it does so, look out. NBC needs a new strong TV show they have good shows but they have been on forever like Law & Order and ER. NBC needs new blood and Knight rider would be a good addition. So, please NBC bring it back I can guarantee you it will do better then Bionic Woman did.

Fantastic. We need this making into a series. As a 28 year old male i think this would make great viewing for people my age. I think Kitt will need to show us a bit more stuff though (what happened to turbo boost and the 2 wheeled ski mode??) PPLLEEAASSEE make the series.

i am a fan of knight rider from greece. The movie was good, but it can be better as series. Mustang was nice but all fans of K.R. have in mind thw old KITT.

KR said:

Regarding a post above: It is called "Knight Rider" because of "Knight Industries" not because of "Micheal Knight". Although he did take on the identity, its still based off of Knight Industries. I as well like the new Mustang as KITT, although we all remember the other KITT, the series needed to revamp the car, would have looked too cheesy to bring out that relic of a car for a modern series, the Mustang was the perfect choice. I believe in the beginning of the TV movie we even saw a glimpse of the old KITT in the garage.

JasonUK said:

I hope this goes to a series. I watched the pilot and it was pretty good. Screams of potential.

Would like to see:
1) More of the Hoff. There's a lot of story and unresolved conflict to mine there with father and son, answer what he is doing now, where the original Kitt is (I hope to god not de-activated). Hell he could even play Garth Knight and be a villain.

2) More emotion and less robotic from Val Kilmer's voice. William Daniels voice had charm and was a friend. Kilmer comes across as more of a machine.

3) More of the bond between Mike Tracer and Kitt, it was practically a footnote in the pilot and Sarah got more of a relationship with the car.

4) The stunts and capabilities of Kitt in the original pilot back in the 80's were more impressive than any seen in this pilot. In all the spinoffs the cars have appeared to be more of a downgrade when it comes to capabilities. Apart from high speed chases, the Kitt in this was inferior (yet supposed to be a successor).

5) Convenient plot devices for the story that make Kitt look weak, please sort them out. When Kitt is deactivated he is no longer bullet proof. The original Kitt was made of bullet proof material. This nano-technology is supposed to be more advanced yet it has a potentially deadly outcome to the driver when malfunctioning. I know in drama you have to have the hero's life in danger, but this seems a stupid oversight on the designer. At least have an axhillary power that would keep Kitt seperate from the car should Kitt be hacked.

That's what this fan would like to see. But we all have our opinions and it might not necessarily be representative of the majority.

I did enjoy the love these guys have for Knight Rider and it was well written.

Thanks
Jason UK

Great Movie! I definitely agree with the lack of car tricks, in the 80's Pilot their intents were simple, start to build a friendship between the car and the driver, both of which were recognizable characters aswell as show that KITT was THE ultimate car, Bulletproof, Turboboost, Self Driving, Ski-Mode (driving on 2 wheels), Smart-Alec Comments, Oil slick, Smokescreen and others all of which happened in the pilot. The potential for the show is great, I loved the change from the Knight semi to the plane, unexpected and a brilliant idea. Another potential idea is throwing the Hoff in as still driving the old KITT for an episode or as an opener for the second series (if they do make it into a series) that would likely help alot in bridging gaps and it'd likely please several older fans (myself included). Other than that it was awesome and i hope that they do make it into a show, it'll get viewers for sure, older and younger alike. And it's still got some of the old knightrider feel, Run with it!

troy dunn said:

as some of you have said above, i have to agree. this movie should be made into a series. i recorded it and i have watched it a few times already. it was well versed in the old series yet with new and exciting twists. i really like the fact that they have a plane now suited for KITT and not just a tractor trailer. also it has been mentioned of the old KITT being seen in the begining and this is true. though you see parts and the plate of the old KITT you also see 2 fully assembled KITTs one under a tarp and one with the hood taken off. this show doesnt go by what happened in KR2000 it goes on where the show left off and i personally think that is a much better idea. i would love to see the new KITT with mike along side the old KITT with micheal. that would make for a very interesting situation and alot of anicdotes as well. i truly believe however that Micheal should have left in the old KITT from the funeral and Mike should have left in the new KITT. these are just my opinions.

john said:

i must admit the idea of the father and son and the 2 kitts teaming together seems like a good idea.
would be a good start to the series to have a 2-3 part episode, where somethings happend and he needs help and suddenly you see the old kitt speeding round the corner and the hoff jumps out

im sure the hoff would jump at the chance its all about wether the writers wanna please the old fans and of course if william daniels would be interested in it but im sure he would

it be fun to see the 2 kitts get into a nice convo and it would beinteresting since they both different and both have different stuff the other cant do,,for example..... in a high speed chase the new kitt gets through however a truck or something comes infront of the old kitt and mike says something like "the trucks in the way of michael and kitt then suddenly u see the hoof and old kitt trubo boost over and have mike say to the new kitt "omg did you see that why dont you have that, that was so freakin cool" then have new kitt reply something like "damm show off" lol

i think that both cars and both men idea sounds really good, the hoff and the trans am and the new hero and the new crappy car

only problem i see is the fact the people watching will be saying "you know what everyones right this new car is crap compared to the old classic" and i dont think the new writers of the show will like to see they made the wrong choice for the car,so they either wont do that OR they will try to make the old kitt look like a cheap crap thing that cant do anything better

Jerimy said:

Bringing back the old Kitt sounds like a fantastic idea but if you'll remember in the 90's tv movie the original Trans am was destroyed. Then kitt was revamped into micheal's 57 chevy then into the newer red pontiac concept car(i think it was a pontiac?) So which Kitt would they use? Either way the return of the old Kitt with Micheal behind the wheel sounds like a fantastic idea, if they run it into a new series.

jerry said:

i think everyone ignores the knight rider 2000 movie so it would be the trans am they would use unless they find another crappy car to be K.I.T.T lets face it that what they did in this alful 2008 movie,i have to say id rather watch knight rider 2000 than watch the 2008 movie again, to me it wasnt knight rider all they did was added basically a few knight rider elements in

i was deeply disapointed

terry said:

im shocked noone said anything about the crappy theme music for this crappy 08 knight rider
it started off good a lil upbeat normal knight rider theme then it became so crappy music wtf man

mitch said:

oh c'mon jerryterry whats with the naysayin? kr08 was good and the series will be even better.all the fans should do their part and watch it again online www.nbc.com/knight_rider and the re-broadcast saturday the 23rd 9/8c.the more viewers the better chance it will get picked up this fall. rally people! tell friends and family!

This was a great show, but if they are going to bring it back micheal T needs to change his name to Knight, also where was the the Turbo boost. Knight rider needs a turbo boost and a really over acted driver being pushed back in to the seat.

Please Please bring it back. I remember watching when i was boy and will never forget it. When i saw the new TV Movie on NBC i had goosebumps all over especially when the new theme song came on even though i prefer the old one.

Thank You for bringing Knight Rider the premier of the show last week was a very good movie. I really enjoyed it even My Mom liked it and not so often that she likes anything T.V. these days. Anyway I Pray that you can bring it back in the Fall. Like previous viewers have said you need another show for N.B.C. it has been a long time I believe the NEW Knight Rider will be one of them. Thank You, Regina

I agree with the comments above and would love to see Knight Rider come back as a series with David Hasselhoff as one of the main characters. But he needs his edgy look back, the sexy tough guy persona. Last night I thought he looked a bit weak and old. Like he hasn't recovered from his tearful breakdown on American Idol.

Bobbcapo said:

The Hoff is getting old. Think about it, he is 55-56. Edward Mulhare was around 60 when KR first appeared. You generally didn't see Devon running around jumping out of cars and getting into fights. It seems as if so many people want to live for 20-25 years ago, and time has kept moving. Expecting Michael Knight to be the hero of the show is not what this concept is about.

Everyone wants to see the K3K's gadgets. If you look at the run of the original KR, KITT became less gageted and more about surveilence, infared, and computer based technology. Most of the neat things everyone likes, ejector seats, smokescreen, oil slick are over the top parlor tricks. It would nice if the producers and writers follow the cannon set by KR, introduce some new cannon, and ignore most of the over the top fan based fiction that everone, including myself, would love to add.

YO said:

I watched the show, but I thought it did not stand up to the original. The original they modified the car so much that pontiac told them to take off their logos. What auto maker these days would say that, RoboCop the series was sued for removing any Ford logos.
In the new KR you don’t see a cool looking dashboard but a cut away of the synthesizer, how cheap and CGI. You don’t have any cool gadgets like turboboost ect., because they won’t modify the car (probably because of Ford). I don’t think you will ever see anything cool like in the original show, because they can’t modify the car, if they do it will cost money which they don’t want to spend if they don’t have too.
You can go on and on about the cool stuff from the old show, 0-300mph in seconds, super pursuit mode, silence mode. If it’s supposed to be the new 3000 car why did they leave out most of the cool features from the 2000 car? Did they loose the instructions?

The new show is to much into CGI which I think looks fake and takes a lot away from the show. Modify the car more so it doesn’t look like the car you can buy off the lot (the reason Pontiac told them to take the logos off the original KITT). Put in a real light sensor in the hood of the car not CGI graphics (CHEAP).
Don’t take a car off the car lot, modify it, take a look at SALEEN Mustang there is a bad ass modified mustang Muscle car. Much more HP than the Cobra KR500. (550HP compared to Saleen’s 620HP). NO COMPAIRISON.

Plot was OK, the show has potential, but put some money, heart and soul into the show. Modify the car much more. I mean late in the original show you had Super pursuit mode KITT. That was some cool modifications, and if that was any kind of CGI graphics it’s a whole lot better that what I have seen lately with the new KR and even at the movies.

This show to me, was just a HUGE FORD ADVERTISMENT, just like TRANSFORMERS was an advertisement for GMC.

John Bailey said:

There are a lot of people talking about how this movie as being after Knight Rider 2000 and how the car seems to be inferior to the original.

The car in Knight Rider 2000 was the Knight 4000, which I am pretty sure means that this movie pretends that KR 2000 never happened. The same might be said for Team Knight Rider if anyone remembers that series.

The following is about to reveal just how much of a geek I am.

I love the new car! The car uses nanite technology and can MORPH into other vehicles (although apparently only programmed for other 2008 Mustangs at the moment)! How can you possibly not see how that is a great tradeoff from the molecular bonded shell in the original series. If these technologies did exist outside of science fiction, I can definitely see where they might not be compatible (hard to morph when your molecules are bonded together). It might be nice if the nanites could be given some more independent programming so that they can operate without the computer (I expect that in a later episode when this becomes a series along with episodes where they are hacked!), but otherwise the movie was a nice introduction to the car's capabilities without giving away too much. Just because we didn't see the new car jump over any thing doesn't mean that it can't, and with the nanites active it is just as tough as the original car. The original KITT was dented in the pilot by running into a plane wing, and malfunctioned all the time when it was inconvenient (remember when Michael towed another car). The new car can already morph into four wheel drive (added later to the original) or possibly to drive on water or other terrain, can move as fast as the original's super pursuit mode (for those of us who did the math when it was going cross country), basically repairs itself from any injury (and possibly even repair its driver), and can hack any computer. There is no limit to what types of appendages or energy based weapons the nanite technology can add to the car when needed. The movie was only a small introduction to what the new car is capable of.

One thing that should be noted is that this version is just more realistic than the previous version, and to appeal to today's more tech savy audience I think this is necessary. The previous car used "sensors" to drive and was capable of analyzing DNA from a distance. This car uses satellite imagery and GPS tracking to navigate, things which didn't exist in the original series but are common knowledge today. It is doubtful that remote DNA analysis will be introduced because today's audience just wouldn't buy it.

As for super pursuit mode, this is when the original series jumped the shark, so let's not wish this on the new series.

I didn't even know they were bringing back Knight Rider I actually found out the day before they were airing it. As a kid it was one of my favorite shows I loved to watch. I watched the show with my family and was glued to the TV every time they went to a commercial they left you in suspense with what would happen next. I thought the entire show was entertaining and exciting. KITT was amazing with his new stealth and car changing abilities. I hope they bring it back I was hoping it would be on after the Oscar's but, I guess we have to wait for the next chapter.....

Peter said:

Pretty lame, if you ask me. First of all, it was nothing more than a big Ford commercial. Second, a Ford Focus keeping up with a Mustang in the chase scene? Are you kidding me? The original KITT had a decked out dash that no one had ever seen before. The Mustang KITT has a single LCD screen. Ooooh...so futuristic! Instead of the watch communicator, they are using a earpiece that is too similar to a Bluetooth cellphone headset. Wow, they are way ahead of their time with that one! Not. It was obviously very low budget, especially with all the bad green-screen effects while driving.

Pretty sad attempt at bringing back a 20 year old show. Hope it sells a few more Mustangs since that was the primary purpose of the movie.

I liked the original series and have all 4 seasons on DVD. However, this movie was just sad.

i to agree with most on here that i would love a show. there does need to be a few tweaks here and there (airplane instead of the truck at the end is an example) i would have to disagree with some as far as bringing back the hoff on a regular basis. he is old and i think its better with some new blood. its fine if he is in a few episodes but not as a regular. the mustang is fine but of course we all prefer the trans am. i did read somewhere if it gets made into a show they would modify the car alot more inside and out. just my 2 cents

Brian W said:

Aim your wrath at GM, not NBC. GM killed off the Firebird after the 2002 model year. As for why not use the 4th gen car in the movie: does using what would have been a 15 YEAR OLD chassis really sound that advanced? The Corvette -- way too expensive (you're forgetting they're shooting a movie, not a car show -- they go through about quite a few cars per episode. Even trashing a few Vettes will quickly add up in one season). The GTO? Way too freaking ugly. Not even Michael Knight could save that overweight toad.

The current Mustang may LOOK like a 60's Mustang, but it was designed and built in the 21st century (3 year old chassis instead of 15 year old one). Want a 21st century KITT? Use a 21st century car - and with no new GM true musclecars buyable TODAY, the Mustang is the only game in town.

As for you hypocrites that whine and complain about the movie being a 2 hour Ford commercial -- few complained about the 2007 Transformers movie being a 2-hour GM movie.

Hypocrites. Make like KITT's manual mode and stick it.

Loved the show!

Some constructive criticism follows:

IF we can't get David Hasselhoff, William Daniels, and the original black Trans Am to guest star in at least one episode in the regular season, may I make the following recommendations:

Val Kilmer, please lighten up your dialogue. One of the fans posted it well here: William Daniels voice came across as charming and as a friend. Yours was way too formal and machinelike. RELAX!!

Put the real red lights back on KITT's hood. The CGI looks as out of place as a wart on Jessica Alba's nose. Ditto for the morphing, the nanite self healing skin, and the rest of the over the top CGI effects.

ONE mode and one body for Kitt. Standard "Hero" mode preferred (Black Cobra with the standard rear spoiler, not the overdone "Attack" mode with goofy double stacked wing).

Would it kill you producers to add a few PUSHBUTTONS to the interior? You've got ONE (count it, ONE!) overdone CGI LCD panel, and rest of the dash seems to be a stock Mustang piece. The original at least LOOKED like the car of the future (as envisioned in the 80's). 25 years and you can't improve what Glen Larson did? come on!

Dump the "shut KITT off" mode. This car is the life of the whole show! Why turn it off? For that matter, why ruin the whole concept where the car is vulnerable to hacking AND can't defend itself when off?

Last but not least, do we really need to make such a big deal out of Agent Carrie Rivai being a Lesbian? Come on! The original show managed to keep genderbending gay/straight controversies out, and was overall fairly kid friendly fantasy fare. Do we really need an adult oriented Knight Rider? We're already expecting Mike Tracer to be hopping from lady to lady the way Michael Knight did it. The overemphasis on Rivai's girl-on-girl sexuality is distracting and unnecessary.
