Here’s a picture I took that could be worth some discussion. KITT’s back seat.
I wonder what that stuff is?

A commerical that just aired showed Mike and in the background is an object matching this.

This gives me some concern, where do the back seats go? I'm not sure what it does to the whole "needing a car with a backseat for the girlfriends son" debate, as they seem to be gone.
Hopefully it is just for the "Attack KITT mode...?"

Is it a Flux Capacitor?

Maybe hes planning to go back to 1982!

Haha yeah I'm you! 88 mph should be a piece of cake for KI3T.
Do I smell some HD goodness in the oven Neil?

You beat me to it. And it was 1985, by the way.
Well, I despised the backseat computer in the backdoor pilot; I suppose rather than dealing away with the concept, they simply revised it a little bit. Guess we'll have to wait and see what its significance is.

I know it was 85, I was referring to when KR TOS first aired

I'm pretty sure that's meant to be pushed back into the trunk area though that wouldn't explain the light thing.... If that have that taking up the backseat then someone needs to be slapped upside the head.
The new and again improved evil's advertisement is currently too long and too badass to display here. But let's just say that with now 50% more evil, this **** is great!

You may be on to something. GST said that he had to rethink why you would put such a supercomputer/AI in a car and make it mobile. Something tells me that KITT's sole purpose/reimagining will explain the backseat. Plus, we also know that in Attack mode he does have an arsenal of weapons. Something tells me this has something to do with the military or national security, which could have some T2/BSG kind of vibes to it.

One thing that was just pointed out to me, was the video of the transformation from F150 to KITT. If this object was permanently on display, it should glow in the backseat during the transform - but there is nothing there but darkness.
Also check out this shot from the Pre Comic Con preview - back seat visible, no silver gadget anywhere.

In the picture you posted Neil, theres no big spoler visible at the back of the car so i would assume the car is not the Attack mode vehicle...
Maybe the 'flux capacitor' (im sure it will have its own KR name but for now thats kind of appropriate' is only visible in Attack mode, seeing as it also shares the 'blue glow' that Ki3t has in that mode...

I'm just in the process of getting the first episode but looking at that pic, 2 things jump out at me....
Is that a red "autobot" symbol on the box thing just in front of the 'flux capacitor...'
and secondly, why does Kitt have GT500 on the seats when the car is in attack mode....???

It shows up in truck mode too, so I believe that it regulates/controls/enables transformations. Since it doesn't show in normal mode (KI3T's original state), it likely isn't directly tied to any of KI3T's normal functions.

hmm I don't really think KI3T should lose the backseat in attack mode! As I said before, I wouldn't want to be sitting in the back seat in that situation! :O

Hmm, there appears to be the letter VMOD or something like that on that black in blue. Wonder what that means, Vehicle Modification perhaps?

My assumption:The thing in the back is what helps make KI3T transform.
Congratulations!By reading this signature,KITT's AWESOMENESS has increased by ONE POINT!
So far KITT's power level is OVER 9,000!!!!

Here is what VMOD is - it's a router from your home to your car...

There's something wrong, but funny about that... Perhaps that giant thing is a giant router?

Or that is still the "computer", replacing that silly sub woofer thing from the backdoor pilot..
