KITT's Scanner question

I was just thinking about something

Bad guys are always trying to steal KITT, Michael is always giving rides to people in KITT, kids in the show think KITT is awesome, but no one ever comments on the scanner, do they?

I don't ever recall anyone asking....... what that is, what it does, what purpose it serves.


Surely the front scanner is the most eye catching part of KITT, apart from the dashboard and interior setup.


You would think at some point during the show someone would ask.........hey what is that?......what does it do?


It seems like the scanner is invisible.

I can recall only scene when it is asked. In The nineteenth hole there is a blonde girl who asks Michael what that red light is in front. Michael says that it's the automatic garage door opener. Check it out at 7:50.

Still only being talked about 1 time is weird to me.

I've noticed that the majority of the time, when Michael is driving and KITT's Auto Cruise mode is deactivated, that the scanner is off.
I think, whenever KITT or Michael turns on a function that KITT would use, the scanner comes on.
Whenever KITT is on Auto Cruise, the scanner is on.
And whenever KITT is in Surveillance Mode, the scanner is also on.

But, I don't think there's a definitive reason, what the scanner is for, what it does.
But it is interesting that it's only mentioned once in all the KR Seasons.

Doesn't some woman ask what it is in front of a hotel and he says it's a camera? Sorry - I dont have the episode names and numbers memorized but I do recal at least one other time it is mentioned.
