Michael's Leather Jacket

Post by KNIGHT RAIDER » Thu Oct 13, 2005 7:51 pm

Throughout the entire Knight Rider Series, we see Michael wearing that cool black leather jacket, wether he is out in cold rainy weather or in 100+ degree heat. I have always wondered if that jacket was made just for the show or was it a common style in the early to mid 80's. That leather jacket was his trademark uniform / security blanket. :D

All they did was blow away a "Ringmaster", they didn't even steal any hamburgers. LOL (Michael)

I'm not sure, but I'm sure DH took cold showers after very hot days after wearing a black leather jacket on very hot days, though....
At least, I hope he did.

The jacket was common in the 80's, so it's not custom made. I don't know which brand was it, but it was just a normal jacket. Anyway, Hasselhoff tells us in the Season 1 DVD, that it was hot in it like hell as they were doing the scenes in the deserts (Goliath, I think so).

In the pilot episode "Knight Of The Phoenix", we see Michael wearing a light blue Member's Only jacket which made him look kinda dorky, but would later don a leather jacket in that episode. The Members Only jacket was very popular back in the late 70's early 80's, so Michael was able to get away with that look, where in today's world would look soo out of place.

I've always wondered myself if that infamous leather jacket was made specifically for the show, or if it was an actual jacket sold in stores. To this day, I've still never seen a store sell a leather jacket exactly like the one David Hasselhoff wore, nor have I even seen anyone with one.

Also, I think I remember hearing from someone that there was actually two different leather jackets that were used. One was for the first and second seasons, and the other for the third and fourth. But I think the differences are supposedly very minor. Anyone know if this is true, or is this just hearsay?

My friend says their must be some significance to why action heroes wear black leather jackets.Michael Knight,Daien Lambert (Time Trax),Frank B.Parker (Seven Days) ect.It must have something to do with super heroes with their capes.

That's funny, I was just talking about that leather jacket with my mom this morning. I think somehow the subject of how hot it was today came up. I had the windows in my car down. Oh I know I saw a nice newer black TA today that's how it came up. I told her that David had said on the DVD that KR was fun to film except on those really hot days inside of the car in that leather jacket!

When Happy Days was made, Fonzie was originally to wear windbreaker because some felt that it made hime look too much like a hoodlum if he had the leather jacket. But as the show went on, the jacket became a trademark of the Fonz. Today, that jacket is in the Smithsonian Institution. As for Knight Rider, since the setting was the present at the time the show ran, that particular leathet jacket was a regular part of Micheal's outfit. It might have also dubbled as a bullet proof vest.
