New KR theme music

Post by scottab21 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 4:27 pm

This is to Shapeshifter mainly, but also to anybody that might know. There really hasn't been much talk about the new theme song to the new NBCU pilot. There has been some speculation as to what kind of music will be played in the opening credits. I have heard that they are trying to cut to commercials with the old style cliffhangers, and it will be filmed with the same pacing as the original series was. So it just seems like we would have heard something concerning the new theme by now. :kitt: :karr:

I would hardly call 5 notes in a 15 sec. teaser a true representation of the new theme song. :?

I believe the theme will be redone by a well known artist, but it maintain the character of the original. I hear that the show will employ more composed music than has been the norm as of late. That is, not as much useage of pop songs, and more original score. The reason for this, as I understand, is that this show has been pretty close to the line budget-wise; they have been trying to put it all on the screen. The mantra on the set has become "we'll take it out of the music budget". Original score is less expensive (and i think, more effective) than licensing popular songs. This may actually help make the project more 80's-centric.

It may make the project more '80s-centric, but the original series constantly used current chart-topping hits during opening credits or montage sequences (even though most of them were covers). On the other hand, using current music also will date the production to this time period, which is probably a bad thing. We wouldn't want a show about a car of the future being dated and obsolete in a short amount of time (on top of the already retro-styled Mustang).

To me, there was nothing cheesier than a cover of a well-known song. They were obviously re-dos, and seemed like a cheap attempt to be hip. They don't do that now days (thank goodness) but even today I think a well-written score adds much more to a show than an ill-placed song does--just look at a show like Grey's Anatomy. I find the song placement in that show loud, obnoxious, and distracting.

Just as long as they don't add lyrics to the opening theme. :D

The opening theme should be composed in a way that has the original tune as a base, and then adds to it something new we haven't heard before, like for example, electric guitars instead of synthesizers. I agree with PHOENIXZERO that there shouldn't be lyrics in the theme, but maybe a voice over like the original had, but not in the first pilot, but maybe in the series, if the show gets picked up. I like what shapeshifter says about the show having an original score to it, that plays throughout the show, that way it feels more like a movie. As in the original, you could just have different ways the theme is played throughout the show, and given the circumstance, change to fit the scene... 8)

The one and only benefit of using the cover songs in the original series was that they were cheaper to pay for once the show hit the DVD format. It's the reason I believe only 2 songs didn't make it to the DVD sets, and those songs were sung by the original artist, Prince. Again, looking further down the road and presuming that there's going to be a series, it will eventually make it to DVD, and I wouldn't want there to be issues with NBC Universal not wanting to pay for music licenses (like they did when they completely and utterly butchered excellent shows like Quantum Leap, for example).

Hi I'm a new member but a massive fan of the original show.

I found this home made trailer of sorts on youtube but I love the remix on the sound track. Would make a good theme for the new show I think.

I agree... don't get some dude like 50cent (c)rapping "Yo its the Knight Rider yo" that would kill it in cheese... and I agree with Shapeshifter too... a good original soundtrack adds to the feel of the show... just like Stu and Don did for the original show.

I wonder if they'll include the Richard Basehart "One man..." narrative.

Unfortunately, it wouldn't be practical since the lone crusader will now be Mike Tracer. What would be a nice tip of the hat though would be for David to perform the narrative since Wilton passed the torch to Michael, and Michael would then be passing it on to Mike.

I think if David Hasselhoff did a narative for the credits would be cool.

Yes Hoff doing the narrative would be cool....yet I'd still like to hear Baseheart echoed in the Bkrnd sound mix like Ben Kenobi appearing to luke...Also I'd have no problem hearing the trance mix of the old theme playing in a disco in Vegas when they find Tracer.

The new two minute preview does sound a little like the Toni Nummela remix, that would be awsome if they used it in the show! I love that mix, my personal favorite... 8)

I would love to hear David do the opening voice over. I'm also hoping that if the pilot becomes a series that they're release a soundtrack.
