I mention all this because a acronym in Knight Rider tends to be attached to a complete, self sustained (save or a pilot/driver) AI contained in a single vehicle. TKR clearly was several vehicles with several different personalities of AIs but seemed to all have the same logistical traits.
In this aspect because it's not so much a single powerful AI controlling the team, the idea to give each piece of a unified AI a source of identification (in other words names) rather then acronyms makes sense.
Instead of K.I.F.T., K.I.S.T., K.I.S.T.2? you have say Dante, Domino, Plato, Beast etc. You have pieces of identity based on a larger singular program that is split up into five parts. Since neither of the personalities have an acronym associated with them, they're all equal - neither is complete.
K.R.O. on the other hand was a complete A.I. save for Martin. K.R.O. was more symbotic than the previous A.I. attempts but the flaw was building/designing the AI after the flaws of the car's driver. Obviously we know how things turned out but it would also help explain the idea that because KRO was a single AI and not fragmented into five parts, he was inherently stronger and possessed no pre-determined weaknesses unlike the TKR vehicles.
Just a theory really but it is pretty clear that each vehicle in TKR didn't function as well as KITT did on his own as a whole. I believe it was somewhat intentional though for the AI programs to be weaker as referenced in the KRO episode so that each vehicle had a unique weakness that prevented them from being superior to one another and thus a greater threat if said vehicle fell into the wrong hands.
