Is KITT equipped with Airbags

Post by KNIGHT RAIDER » Sun Jan 30, 2005 2:17 am

Was this topic ever mentioned in the series about KITT being equipped with airbags. Eventhough we all know that KITT is virtually indestructable, it is still a good idea to have airbags installed as a safety precaution. I have studied KITT's dashboard to see if there are any openings for an airbag to deploy, but could find none.

All they did was blow away a "Ringmaster", they didn't even steal any hamburgers. LOL (Michael)

With a plot device such as "passive laser restraint," who needs airbags!

The "Passive Laser Restraint System" was not incorporated into K.I.T.T. until the 3rd season. For the first two seasons, KITT had what appeared to be a hole in the center of his gull wing steering "wheel." That would have been the ideal place for an airbag to deploy. However, since KITT was in a class by himself, the concept of airbags probably wasn't even necessary with the countless other abilities KITT had.

KITT was designed to avoid obstacles and therefore crashes wasn't he?? I seem to remember Devon saying something to that affect to Michael in the pilot episode..

Airbags were not to common in 82 so I would say he didn't have them. I guess one could assume that since the technology existed, in its infancy, and as advanced as KITT was/is, he'd have to have them.

It like the tape deck. That always bugged me. CD players actually came out in 82. Granted it wasn't an option on a Firebird till some five years later, but something like that would have made KITT look way advanced for the time.

Another feature that makes KITT look dated is his built in printer. Back in the day, most printers printed in black & white, where now the printers of today are color lazer sharp.

I don't think KITT's gullwing wheel could have been equipped with an airbag.
The wheel looks much too small for any kind of safety device.

Why would KITT need airbags anyway? Anything in his way, he would readily and easily go through...a brick wall, a semi-truck, etc. KITT is an irresistible force with rarely an immovable object along his way. And if ever KITT was to meet with such force, he can just turbo-boost over it or alter direction within a blink of an eye.

In KOTP, Devon said it was virtually impossible to get into a mishap or a collision with KITT, which is probably no restraint devices were built in or mentioned at first, though he did have seat belts, which where rarely worn.
