The real purpose of the show?

Honestly, what is the purpose of TV shows such as Knight Rider?

If the real purpose is to gain a lot of money from advertisements, then wouldn't viewership numbers count more than ratings? Then why should we worry about the ratings droppings if the viewership continues to rise (as in the second episode, it has worse ratings but better viewerships)? If, let's say, the ratings keep dropping every week but the number of viewers continue to rise (maybe because of the whole escapism thing), would the show be dropped? What's the point of the show having sky-high ratings but only a little number of viewers? Wouldn't it be bad for the ads?

I don't know how this all works so please enlighten me. As far as it is, looking from the Nielsen topic it seems like BOTH the viewership AND the ratings are important, though the reason why eludes me.

Are ratings the percentage of people who watched that one show out of all people watching TV at that time? or am I thinking of somethign else?

Ya,I don't think so..How many Pontiac commercials did they use on the original show. Most people didn't even know what kind of car it was. Ford is trying to sell Mustangs and F150's..Maybe you should watch the 8 Ford commercials every show..Count them tonight!

Maybe I could care very little about what they are trying to sell because I'm enjoying the best Knight Rider revamp to date. Hmmm.

Plus, as I recall, when the original aired, Pontiac got so tired of the requests for the "KITT Car" that the show was no longer allowed to refer to the car as a tran am. Only T-Top......
