I agree 100%! I think the steering "wheel" should have had the following controls:

Turbo Boost -- A button for the right hand, and a duplicate for the left hand.

"Mode" Selector -- A three-way switch, between "Cruise Mode", "Pursuit Mode", and "Super Pursuit Mode"

Auto Pilot -- A toggle switch

Ski Mode L -- A single button available to the left hand

Ski Mode R -- A single button available to the right hand

Each of those functions was frequently used, and each of them had a dramatic impact on the behavior of the vehicle. For those reasons, those controls belonged in a place where they could be used without removing a hand from the "wheel." For the controls on the "switch pods" to be available to the driver without removing his hands, the steering "wheel" must be oriented upright.
