My cameo

Post by z00story » Tue Sep 16, 2008 2:32 am

If you watch Justin's interview while he's in KITT on a greenscreen stage on youtube, I'm the dork in the orange shirt who keeps coming up to KITT. I'm putting motion trackers on his windshield.

No, not at all, you look like your doing some rather important work. -And I like your hat.
If you didn’t run in and do that then, next thing you know someone would probably be yelling action.
No coffee cup lids this time I see. :D
Trust me you’re not a dork, you’re not the one on youtube getting autographs in crayon.

NEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDS! :P Oh and LMAO trissybabes... It could be worse Sue, you could demand KITT sign in binary, which would be 01001011 01001001 01010100 01010100 BTW. >_> <_<

Haha, that's cool man! At least you're not standing on a road while there's a car coming at you..... I just had a Knight Rider 2000 flashback.... I think I'm going to have Knightmares now.....

Now who's the dork?
The new and again improved evil's advertisement is currently too long and too badass to display here. But let's just say that with now 50% more evil, this **** is great! :skar:

z00story,

Cool behind the scenes cameo. I am just curious, what kinds of software is your department using for the dash effects and transformations? Is it something professionals can buy off the shelf like After Effects, Shake, Houdini, or something more propriatory? Some of it (transformations) looks like it's based on 3D Max or Maya.

More importantly, make sure you let us know when you face sneaks its way into the HUD when KITT is searching a database of wanted criminal or something!

Here’s what z00story told us in this thread. He can use that as a jumping off point so he doesn’t have to repeat himself.
z00story wrote:wow, lots of replies in one night!

First off, thank powers above me, who actually suggested we show you this shot. Believe it or not, a LOT of us come to these forums. In fact, I see a lot of great questions here about how we make things, and some of them would be better answered by other people I work with and their skill set.

I can say briefly that yes- there are two different shots. The one I showed you is the first one we did, the one that aired is the second one. The transform is exactly the same, the only difference is in the camera work. In this one, I walked around the spot, in the second one, I drove around it (to get a smoother, dolly like move).

As for reflections - Nate can respond in far more detail than me (Nate if you are reading this sign up and join in). In short, there are more and less complicated ways to do this. Nate had a really cool trick that involved me doing a couple of quick passes in photoshop, but he did all the magic in his 3D program.

As for what 3D program we use - I'm not sure if I should say, I will leave that up to the 3D team to decide. For 2D We use After Effects and a program called Nuke - not to mention all the usual suspects: photoshop, illustrator, and some specialty programs for tracking, etc...

Thank you. With all the threads KRO has it's hard to pinpoint specific things when it doesn't involve conflict.

Hey, this is Krenigma from the 3D team over at Knight Rider... hilarious photoshopping of him, love it, we're going to have to post those around the office! Anyone who wants to create more Zoo story backdrops please post them!

For those wanting to know about the 3D we're planning on giving a lot more information about what we use, for the time being though I can't say the specifics. I can say its mostly off the shelf software... what you quickly realize with most 3D however, is that every program is pretty similar with minor things once does better than the other, its less about the software and much more about the skill of the artist and thinking out what your doing really carefully... the transforms are particularly complex, and require a lot of thought before even getting onto the computer... we do sketches, talk about what happens, the logic of it, and try to make it as "realistic" as possible... within reason, of course.

I have a lot of respect for digital artists be it conceptual, 3D, or 2D motion graphics. I know a lot of people seem to just think artists just wave their magic wand, press a few buttons, add a few filters and voila instant success and it's never that easy. A good artist makes it appear that way.

Thanks for sharing what you can about the process.
