When I first heard about the shapeshifting feature, I immediately knew it was going to take the place of Turbo Boost. NBC Universal is trying to implement the failed ideas they used in Viper and apply it to their more successful franchise, Knight Rider, which they know already has a much larger built-in audience. As has been pointed out here already, even the font for the new show is the same as Viper's. And that makes me wonder if perhaps that was an intentional subliminal message by NBCU.
“Gimme maximum turbo thrust and blast me outta here, will ya!?”

The lack of turbo boost (IF true) does concern me. I do not understand how a decision could be made not to include it. Too expensive? Then get rid of one of the characters so you don't have to pay the actor's salary. Seriously, I think it's that important.
The glimmer of hope of course is that if it does become a series they can always just throw it in later: "Hey KITT, what does this new button do?"
Voila. Everyone is happy again.
