KITT and Turboboost

Post by Assasinge » Thu Sep 29, 2016 7:11 pm

So I've been wondering this for a while now. In many episodes, when Michael wants to turboboost, KITT will say it's not possible, or something like they won't make it. Yet, 98% of the time when Michael does it it works just fine. How can a supercomputer like KITT claim they won't make when a human like Michael know they will?

I think KITT's risk assessment sub routines were probably tuned a little on the conservative side in order to protect Michael, which after all was his primary program.

Can you give a specific example of which episode where kitt says they won't make it, Michael then does it anyway and makes it?

Oh damn, that's not going to be easy, there's a lot more episodes I can vaguely remember, but it happens a lot. Say...I don't know, but you seriously don't remember KITT saying something like, "Michael, there's not enough time!" Or, "Michael, you can't br thinking of...oh dear." Something like that?

I can remember Kitt saying surely you're not thinking of turbo boosting over the longhorn in customer kKitt season 2 and Michael does it anyway but Kitt doesn'tsay wwe're not going to make it. Another time is the pilot but Kitt initiates the turbo boost for him. But I can't think of one time where Kitt said we won't clear it.

I would have to watch it again to be 100% sure but in KOTJ when the bad guys are shooting at KITT and there is a truck blocking the road just before they jump he says "we may not clear".

Kitt said "We MAY not clear." not we won't clear that jump in that episode. In season 3 Kitt vs. Karr, Kitt says, "The risk factor is too high." Before the obstacle of the truck that Karr turbo boosted through with barrels. I think Kitt's microprocessors deduced that if they were to jump, they would land over the barrels damaging him from his undercarriage. In the pilot, Devon mentions that the car's microprocessors make sure that there will never be any mishaps or collisions during Michael's test drive of the Knight 2000 and why it went around the truck on autopilot. I'm sure if there were ever a chance that kitt would have been forced to endanger human life by turbo boosting, he would have used the manual override over Michael similarly to how Karr used his.

I've always figured that KITT was referring to the oncoming traffic that had had to take evasive action to avoid the mess KARR left behind. Had KITT landed on even one of those barrels, it could have pitched him into one of those vehicles, a risk both he and Michael would deem unacceptable. Also, don't forget that by season 3, KITT wouldn't ordinarily find himself having to override Michael's actions because the trust that had developed between them was virtually absolute.

In fact, it's this natural bond that formed the basis for the Knight Reformulation One. By creating a malleable AI capable of immediately developing a symbiotic relationship with his driver, they exposed the new AI to Martin Jantzen's mental instability, creating a relationship that could have proved to be a greater threat than KARR ever was... and he was willing to cook Mandy alive to get what he wanted from John.

Welcome aboard the Knight 2000.

Thank you. What's all this, it looks like Darth Vader's bathroom?

If you'll re allfrom tthe pilot episode, when Devon activated the microprocessor Kitt, he said that the can't be involved in any mishap or collision. Further more, when Michael was playing chicken with a 10 ton semi, Kitt's AI took over because he was going against his dominant program the preservation of all human life. Michael was putting his life in danger and the microprocessor deduced that it needed to take over. Granted he was showing off, but he was also securing the lives in the car.

In the case of Kitt vs Karr, Michael couldn't scan ahead to know how scattered the barrels were that Karr knocked all over the road so not only could he have damaged the car when it would land after a turbo boost, but it could also endanger the life of its pilot. Despite how human Kitt seemed, at its core, it was still a computer. Regardless of how much trust or how strong a bond it developed with its driver, his dominant program will always take over ie Knight of the drones where Kitt decided to eject Michael when his exhaust system was being targeted by a missile.
