Knight Rider in Surround

Post by Skav » Wed Aug 01, 2007 9:28 am

I recently ripped the pilot episode and converted the mono sound into 5.1 using Super software. I have to say the results are not that spectacular. You can hear the whistle of KITT's engine in the rears but apart from that there isn't much else. The fronts sounded "louder" and there was more impact but there is very little bass. You can hear little things like birds chirping that I never heard in the original DVD.

I suppose that is what you get from a show that was originally recorded in mono.

I guess this was the reason why Universal never bothered to remix the sound.

I can't help but wonder that the results would have been better had the show been recorded in stereo. I could have had fun with the 4th season had Universal kept the sound in it's original sound format.

Why not give Season 4 a try just for the hell of it?

Universal has downmixed the sound to mono for the DVD release of season 4. Season 3 was recorded in mono and S4 is the only one originally done in stereo.

If you use the program for Season 4, perhaps it can recapture some of the original sound?

Skav, if you take a look at the R2 Universal Playback releases from a few years ago, their Season 4 episodes (Sky Knight, Knight Sting) are in Stereo.

It's free software called Super. Just type in Super in Google and it's the first website it brings up.

Paul, yeah I remember those stereo dvd's. But not even a handful of s4 episodes were on there.
