Hasselhoff Interview -- Includes Movie/TV Series Info

Post by Knight Rider Archive » Thu Oct 05, 2006 8:56 am

From itv.com:
Would you be tempted to bring Knight Rider back?

Well, I've been trying to get it back. I bought the rights to it for a million dollars from Glen Larson but he said ‘I don't know if you're the right guy to make this'. And that's OK, because it is business. He didn't know if I was a good enough Producer to produce a movie or if I could get something made. I don't dislike him for it. But the reason he said that is because I wasn't hot then. I'm hot now. Thank God.

Now we're going to make the movie. And if it doesn't make the movie I've already contacted the President of NBC – because I'm hot on NBC again – and said ‘you want to have the highest rated show of the year? I got it. You can fight me over it and say I'm an idiot, but I am never wrong when it comes to who my audience is.'

There are 29 million people who Internet searched me yesterday and they all love Knight Rider. So let's make a series out of it. Whatever happened to Michael Knight?

So if it doesn't get made as a movie then I'd rather bring it back as a series because then I could stay at home for a bit.
Very interesting! Looks like the franchise could go in a few new directions...

We both got so excited about the news we posted it about the same time in two separate topics LOL.

Don't you just love David's ideas. He just won't let KR stay down. AWESOME.

I just noticed that!!!

Okay, this begs the question: would you rather have a new Knight Rider MOVIE, or a new Knight Rider TV SERIES??? Both have their own pros and cons...

Im greedy how about both.

It sounds like David is definitely still in the movie as the actor. Glen just don't feel He can be a good producer. That's fine by me as long as David is still playing Michael Knight.

No question for me - I'd rather have a new series. A movie will only have a few sequels at best...a series though could potentially run for years and provide many hours of new Knight Rider action. The only benefit of it being a movie that I can think of off the top of my head would be the bigger budget.

I'm with March2875 -- I'd love to see both -- I'm greedy!

The thought of "Original Universe" Knight Rider coming back as a potential series would be fantastic, and would soften the blow of an all-new "retelling" on the big-screen. We could have the best of both worlds!

Come on NBC: Listen to him!

As I said in the other post of same topic, lets all hope this works out. I would rather see a new tv show in a new direction, instead of the one movie.

I think an animated series could have its merits. As long as they did a live action version as well. I would be interested in watching it

I have to say, I'd love to see more Knight Rider in any genre, whether it be a movie, a series, a series of tv movies, a cartoon, a line of comic books, or whatever. You name it!

There is a very large market out there for Knight Rider, us Knightriders eat it up, something that Hasselhoff and Larson are well aware of. Hasselhoff-related Knight Rider has always done well with the ratings, and now he is available to do more, can only be a good thing. As I said before, I would welcome an all-new Knight Rider to the big screen if a new TV series meant that Hasselhoff could continue in the role. Not sure if the "suits" would go for two totally different interpretations at the same time, though.

Hi,

I think i'd prefer the movie, it would be a movie to stir all those retro feelings, the series idea, although very good, would in my opinion dent the retro factor. Bit of a win win question though.

Speaking of budgets for films and TV, they were saying on the radio
the past few days that many TV episodes such as the new series
Hero's and so on have budgets that cost a million dollars per hour to
produce. A nice budget like that for a Knight Rider series today would
get us a really nice show!

I myself would prefer a new series. Series today, if done right, can
bring us years of exciting epsiodes instead of a half baked remake
of the pilot with new people. :?

Just look at the new Battlestar Galactica. That is one of the top rated
series running currently and was a remake/reimagining of an old show
that crapped out due to lack of veiwership and budget.

Make it darker and more to todays standard of living and it would be a hit.

Honestly, a new series. As mentioned, you would have one or a few films and then where would the franchise go?

Plus with movie budgets, they have a chance to make it all glossy and no substance a'la 'Superman Returns' which would mean the film would turn out to be BAD.

With smaller budgets, they tend to work harder at storylines and create something better. I've notice this happen with smaller budget films, which are half the time, better than big budget films.

A new series would also have lasting appeal on an audience where as one movie is talked about but then generally forgotten within a couple of months.

Btw, can anyone think of a show that ended but was bought back by a return series years later?

I struggle to think of one.

Spin off's don't count.

A few I can think of are:

Battlestar Galactica
Star Trek (Various incarnations)
The Munsters
Dr. Who
Superman (various sorts)
Batman (temporaraily - Birds of Prey)
Knight Rider (Team KR)

and I am sure there are more....

I think that a series would be better for us Knight Rider fans because all this time that we have been anticipating the movie would probably not be worth it for just a two-hour movie. But it would be worth to get a series because as someone said before in this topic a series can last for years. And you know what that means....more DVD's!!!!!

Big up's to David Hasselhoff !!!

One Million Dollars per episode is relatively cheap. I believe "V" was the first regular series to cross the 1-million-dollar-per-hour barrier and that was over 20 years ago. A few years ago, ER cost oevr $13 million per episode, although most of that money went into stars' salaries and broadcast rights.

You can have bad expensive movies, and good cheap TV shows. The most important thing is to have good writing and interesting characters, and that is more about creativity than cash.

I think it would be difficult to do Knight Rider as a new series today. Galactica works because there are many characters and a deep rich universe to work with. They have many characters which allow for multiple story arcs that can span weeks or years. If Knight Rider is supposed to be about "one man who can make a difference", I think it would be difficult to translate into a serialized structure which today's audiences expect.

I gotta stick with the movie. Let's see what KITT looks like on the big screen and maybe w can get 3 good movies over 6 years.

So based on this interview is David involved in the movie or isn't He. I think He means he is involved as the actor but not in the producing role. What about the rest of you is David in the movie or isn't he?

Hmm...I don't know, call me old fashioned but I like the origional just the way it is. TKR didn't make it so I am not so sure another new show would make it. I didn't like TKR, I watched the first show and hated it, I never watched it again. I didn't like KR2000 either. Maybe it's just me. :( Sorry guys I am sick so that doesn't put me in a good mood.

I would say to go for a new series. If the series does well enough, that in & of itself will probably pave the way for a movie anyway, in which case we'll end up getting the best of both worlds. Although...I have my doubts about putting it on NBC. In my view, that network has never kept anything alive that was creative or different. When shows like Surface and Threshold came out, I immediately knew they didn't have a chance. Sure enough, they got canceled, and I believe one of them only even lasted 15 episodes.

My issue with this is really NBC because of their track record with sci-fi shows (i.g. Knight Rider, Viper, Quantum Leap, Surface and Threshold to name a few). It's not even really just the sci-fi shows but anything that isn't a reality show, medical drama, or sit-com. But then again, David seems to have a magic touch where everything he tries out turns to gold (Click and America's Got Talent have done quite nicely despite not being the highest quality of movie/series).

I can see a new series following the same path that Viper did, by starting off a particular way on NBC, getting canceled, and later resurrected on another network like the Sci-Fi Channel.

This is all great news, but what’s with the rights, which Glen had sold to Weinstein Company in September? (Look News from Aint it cool http://knightrideronline.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=9571 )

How can David buy his rights back from Glen?
The Interview from ITV it’s from earlier date (this week? I didnt find a exactly date), or?
Or I misunderstood anything?
Greetings

I totally agree with Joe Huth, a series would run longer and could have all sorts of fun in it. Especially thinking about tons more episodes to watch. I don't think it will ever be better than the original Knight Rider though.
