I always figured that dirt and dust had a hard time clinging to the Molecular Bonded Shell.

Good point but in the episode "City of fire" he is particually dirty and I thought that maybe if he had nano technology because he was badly damaged in that episode it wasn't working or something which made him really dirty.

I remember laughing a lot about a dirty Kitt always getting shiny clean after changing into the SPM form. But finally I figured it out how it all goes: the high powered hydraulics systems simply blow off the dust from Kitt's body.

In SPM the dirt would certainly blow straight off him.

Imagine how people would react if the producers were to clean Kitt for every scene in Ring Of Fire!!!

Ah, I knew there was one where he got all muddy. Well, I think the case in that one was that K.I.T.T. was constantly in the swamp and kept putting back on more mud and dirt. Just speculating, though...
