KITT sells for $60,000 at auction

I went to the Barris Custom Car auction at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles. The "Nick Rider", the Knight Rider SPM-ish car that appeared on the Nick & Jessica Variety Hour, sold for $60,000 to a phone-in bidder on the east coast.

This car will also be used the upcoming Adam Sndler-produced film "Bench Warmers." Sony Pictures is creating a new dash for the car (the existing car has just a regular Trans Am dash) which the winner will keep after filming is over. I was disappointed that I couldn't get to see the new dash, but the vehicle coordinator for the film should be sending me some photos.

There were 2 General Lees for sale; one went for $42,000, the other sold for $50,000. I was pleasantly surprised to see KITT bring in more money, although perhaps having two Generals lowered the price for both.

I'll have photos and more details later, just very tired at this point.

I can't believe that thing actually sold for that much. It's nice to hear that Sony is putting in a new dash. Hopfully they'll fix the outside of the car and take off all that ugly SPM stuff.

It sounds like $60,000 was the first and only bid. It doesn't sound like there was much competition in bidding for the thing. If there were any others, maybe they realized $60,000 was already absurd! So this money went to Barris?

There was quite a bit of interest in it. I believe the starting bid was $20,000 and it made it up to the $60,000 mark.

Barris gets the majority of it, portions will go to the auction house and I think the Petersen museum may get a small cut.

No doubt the appeal of that car to the bidders is its screen time on the Nick & Jessica show and its upcoming Adam Sandler movie (and yeah, it came from Barris' garage). Without these three facts, that car doesn't stand a chance of being snapped up on the opening bid price.
