No Guest Access Temporary

Hey,
We're being hit pretty hard the last few days by the virus that is affecting various PHP communities. Rest assured the holes this virus takes advantage of have been plugged weeks ago, but the requests, even though they are receiving "403" errors are still happening. So while it doesn't affect any of our data, it just adds to the load and use of our systems resources. So, until thinks slow down a bit, I've turned off guest access into the forum, it should speed things around a bit. I hope you all understand.

i had this next comment as a new post till i read this so apologies for the double post (please delete the new thread sure

).
iv had that same screen, but the stats are now working but iv lost over 130 on my post count. is that accurate number now lost i take it coz of the bugs? and there's been a couple of "you have been banned" screens, but nothing a quick press of the "back" button can't fix (even though it scared me senseless first time i saw it lol!!)
so sorry to hear of the difficulties uv been having neil, hope you have good luck.

The stats issue was a seperate bug that I've now fixed. The reduction in post count isn't from the virus either, but rather from some deletion of older posts through routine maintance. Apologizes for the ban screens, I've installed a script that should ban most of the IPs that the virus comes from, but unfortunately the virus can mask itself as other IPs, so there may be some innocents.
Just to give some people numbers, cause they intrigue the hell out of me:
Normally this site does on average 300-500MB of transfer a day. This virus went active around Dec 24th, using Google as a means to target various PHP incarnations. Google has since plugged there hole, but bits of the virus still remain floating. On the first day the virus was live, we had over a gig in traffic, the same for the next two days, resulting in KRO being shutdown for a period of time for going over the bandwidth allotment. I added 4 more gigs of bandwidth to the account, but that didn't help, the next days were 700MB, 600MB and 700MB, not as bad as before, but the big day was to come. On Dec 30th we received over 30,000 requests from the virus, resulting in 2.5 gigs of bandwidth recorded. 5-6 times our normal daily amount! We went over quota early on Dec 31st, and weren't live again until Jan 1 when the new month started.
We've been a bit better then, primarily since I've been trying to take a more proactive roll in blocking the virus, the first few days have been 600MB, 500MB and yesterday was back around 400. So I think the worst is over, but I wanted to try to narrow it down a bit more just to be safe and see what the findings show.
I hope you guys all understand what I'm trying to do. I love this site, and I love the community here, and I'm asking for any means of support from the community. I just ask that you all bare with us a bit until the smoke clears. And thank you for your support.

is that always the way it has been? when older posts get erased the count for each person always goes down? losing that amount it seems impossible for some poeple to get the count they have! lol!

Makes us feel kind of exclusive, doesn't it? lol

We are exclusive...and I love the feeling.
Neps: We're all aware of the predicament regarding the site. I fully support your decision to ban lurkers as of this time, if its necessary then do what must be done. Hopefully we can go back to normal at the soonest after all the glitches have been fixed.

Hats off to Neps for doing everything he can to keep this board alive. Your a good man. Keep up the good work.
I got a question. Did the virus cause the "Most Users Online" record to jump from 60 to 197?

I'll second that, Neps not only hosts this wonderful forum but hosts it well.
Before I came to this board, Knight Rider was a passing interest. Now, I love it. I wholeheartedly thank you all for turning me into a nerd

Just a heads up, for the next few hours I'll be doing some things to the board in the background. So if you get dreadful response times... blame me.

Being a (former) lurker, I don't mind, although it did come as a surprise when I loaded the login screen. But hey, I was looking for an excuse to create an account for the longest time.
EDIT: There are a few bugs in my account. When I try to put my birthday/gender in my profile, it won't take. And apparently I last visted 'Never'.

Welcome Phoenix915, it was all a ruse to get you to sign up!

Well I hope you decide to stay past the guest access issues.
The bugs you mentioned were some system wide issues that have now been resolved. Please let me know if you have further trouble!

Someone should write a CSI-like fan fiction of the technical side of the Foundation. You know...the side that defuses all the virus threats and hackers from getting in to the higher end, computer functions of FLAG...like KITT and such.
It's so sad that the world inspires evil programmers to cause such chaos.

I have the Google Toolbar installed in IE. It slices, it searches, and it blocks pop-ups for free. (4,086 blocked so far!) It can be found
here.

I don't think so. I have noticed that sometimes a pop-up slips through, but it isn't often. Usually, the toolbar automatically blocks all pop-ups unless you tell it not to block them at a certain site or press the control key when clicking on a link. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.
