I found this website that gives good history to muscle cars. This one has a run down of all the gens of Firebirds, motors, 0-60 times, and pics. Check it out.

Here's a few links that show how the Firebired really got its start. It's fascinating to me. In my opinion, KITT and the whole 3rd gen 'bird design reflect these early concepts. I LOVE turbine engines!

Firebird Question:

I distinctly remember hearing at one point and time that KITT was built one from one the first production F-bodies, before they arrived at Dealerships. In real life, I mean - not the storyline. We do know that '82 was the model change year, right? Does anyone else remember hearing this, or knowing anything about it?

The best I can do is from the book the Knight Rider Legacy where Glen Larson states that he always had the 1982 Pontiac Trans Am in mind for KITT, because it was new, very clean looking, and not yet widely available, and that they wouldn't have to do much to it to make it into a futuristic car. Then after that, a train derailed carrying a whole slew of the cars, which ended up going to Knight Rider and the Fall Guy, since they couldn't be sold as new.

Kitt wasn't one of the first F-bodies, maybe one of the first 3rd generation F-bodies because wern't some of the prototype cars used for the pilot?
I don't know though, Kitt could have looked cool inside of a 1967 Firebird

. At least a lot better than he did in that fugly old Chevy from KR 2000

The F**king ugly (fugly) Chevy Bel-Air (?) that KITT was transplanted into from the crates in Knight Rider 2000.

(nice colorful explanation, huh, almost looks like an accident in computer language programming)

I understood the meaning. I just didn't agree with it. The '57 Chevy is a classic, especially in baby blue.

Ah, should have specified it, and to be honest, I thought the car looked great, it was just totally out of tune and sync with the show, and what they did to it.

I'll go with that.

No offense, out of all 4 cars I've owned only 1 wasn't a sleek and purty 3rd gen f-body.That one was a fugly 1978 Mustang II Ghia. Now on that we can all agree, those was fugly!

Maybe just some latent aggression from the Chevy being selected for the movie over a Firebird.

Some one said 'history of the Firebird' -- I'm only sorry it took so long for me to post!
More specs about V6 F-bodies (some what Firebird biased) can also be found through Firebirdv6.com. The latest in forced Induction modification of the V6 Firebirds (and some Camaros) can be found in the R&D forum of ProjectVirus.com.
Now if you'll excuse me, someone let me out of the garage and I have to get back before anyone notices.
