This is probably the only way that it can really be done with today's technology. Too bad the technology that KITT had is still science fiction.

if you search online for top gear bmw self drive they had a bmw do a flying lap of the test track driving itself . also seen videos online vw have a golf that drives its self and actually has a scanners etc thats maps its surroundings so not actually that far off kitt by any means
