KI3T: automatic or manual?

So is KI3T an auto or manual? I know the KR is a manual. In the original pilot movie, there was no shifter until it had to be driven in manual mode. At which point the manual shifter and clutch pedal appeared. In many of the scenes during "Journey to the End of Knight" you can can hear Mike hitting the rev limiter during u-turns. Which suggests that KI3T is a manual and being driven by Mike. I noticed in the image in the trailer to "Knight of the Iguana" that Mike's hand is on KI3T's shifter, and it's an auto. So the question is....Does KI3T go both ways?
