spelling on my firebird's dash and in manual...kinda odd

i just realized today that my 2001 firebird has the word Gage, and not Gauge - trying to save money by not putting in the u, or is there some other reason..?
i noticed it on the "Check Gages" light...no u...weirds me out.

I guess the engineers are better car-makers than they are spellers.

Either spelling is acceptable. Like Theater or Theatre or Honor or Honour.
