Just been wondering about Kitt's oil slick.
I would guess there must be a resivour of some kind to hold the oil, where would this be located?
and would kitt know the level of the oil?

I don’t think there was ever any discussion about it in any of the shows. But the obvious answer is yes. The oil needs to be stored somewhere and yes Kitt would need to know when it was empty, or at least getting low so it could be topped up again.

From what I remember of it, the oil slick is sprayed on the road, so that would indicate that its pumped under pressure instead of gravity feed. So the reservoir could be anywhere really, but would probably be in the engine bay for easy access.

Or maybe that’s the explanation for why Michael filled Kitt with gas in a different place than we would expect….. the “normal” fuel flap is for the oil slick tank, and the one behind the license plate is the fuel tank.

I guess there must have been a reservoir for the oil - not just for generating an oil slick but also for the paintbrushes that were used a few times (incl. The Pilot).

In the Pilot (from where the above piccy was taken), Buddy (a kid who hides in the car, then pops up to take part in the Demolition Derby) presses a random button. This causes the above 'paintbrushes' to emerge and 'paint' the road with oil. Some car behind KITT skids as a result, and another car ploughs into the car that skid.

I remember another ep where it was used to cause the person behind to lose tyre grip and thus skid. Another James Bond-inspired invention I guess.

That just looks like a spray of oil to me. I just checked the pilot, and that also looks like a spray of oil. It's just black is all. :spm2:

It actually is more like an paint jet, than a paint brush. In most instances, you see the jet spraying the oil on the ground, rather than it just dumping, I think that is what the others were trying to refer to when they said 'paintbrush'

I tried to increase the contrast and brightness on the image, above, and it still looks like brushes to me. Maybe I'm just blind?

Yeah makes sense too. Not much point having it just running out and leaving a couple of little trails of oil on the road.

Much better to have it in a wide spray to cover lots of road area.

Isnt on the Dash a area called "Oil" with a numerical display next to it? I cant remember either that or it flashes, I think it is below Kitts Red, vocal box thingy

Oil pressure warning light. Even Turbine engines need to warn you of low oil pressure, I guess.

would't the spray of oil be more behind the back wheels so that other cars hit the oil

I would agree on most of what you said but I think that they would need a sprat part to keep the oil use for the spray then the oil use for the engine.because if you run out of oil for the engine you engine would over heat.

Yeah, they most likely had different sections for the engine oil, the oil slick oil, or maybe not, since KITT does have a technician, and they can replenish the oil whenever needed. The spray feature is to put the oil out in a wide swath, naturally the thing is behind KITT's rear tires, you can sort of tell that by watching the episodes.

I would think, and hope that it was a different areas for the oil slick and the engine oil. Sure KITTs got the technicians, but what if they were away from one for an extended period of time. Being without Oil in your engine isn't a good thing (speaking from experience :LOL:)

Also, seems kinda inefficient to have the oil pan in the front supplying the source in the back. But then it would seem inefficient to have two oil pans at all. And the Gas tank is stored in the back anyway, so distance doesn't really matter... Sorry, long day.
