Because of the classic nature of the movie...it may have been overlooked. The Cannonball Run. Burt Reynolds said the line about seeking out a car to do the race with.

I think it was more of a joke reference to Burt's other move, Smokey and the Bandit. I think Cannonball Run was out before Knight Rider.

Darn. You're correct.
Just checked IMDB. Cannonball is listed at June of 1981 and KR premiered in 1982.
Wishful thinking, mere seconds after hearing the line on my part.

Smokey and the Bandit sure does have a lot of ties to KR though. He is driving KITT in the third one

Smokey and the Bandit, Cannonball Run were all great movies when I grew up as a kid...
