Who's built their own scanner?

I'm beginning to become tired of my current scanner on my KI3T. Maybe I'm just getting impatient waiting for the GT500 front end. Anyway, I'm looking into the possibility of building my own KI3T scanner. Has anyone done this, or have any good advice? I'm more of a mechanical person than electronics. Although I deal with automotive electronics on a daily basis working in Cadillac Service.

well since you're into building things, why not make the real thing:

Anamorphic Equalizer - KITT's most apparent feature was his front scan bar called the Anamorphic Equalizer. The device is a fiber-optic array of electronic eyes. The scanner could see in all visual wavelengths as well as X-Ray and infrared. Occasionally, the bar could pulse in different patterns and sweep rapidly or very slowly. The scanner is also KITT's most vulnerable area.

it's not entirely impossible...

one could probably make something out of radioshack parts if one were so inclined.
