New LED scanner Prototype I'm making...

I was just curious if anybody would be interested in a new LED scanner that flows like KI3T but doesn't carry the 1000$ price tag. Now I've made a prototype and I'm using 40 SB LED's in a line and a light diffuser to make the movement smooth and stealthy. You sacrifice brightness for the smoothness but I really don't want it to be that obvious especially around the law. I will post pics and videos tomorrow but just was curious who would be interested in a 15" by 1" square fixed scanner and if the wold be willing to pay 100$ for it. The scanners I've seen by JC Whittney and cheap knockoffs leave a lot to be desired. I'm not willing to pay 500$+ for the huge one that really is made for the TA. I own a 91 MR2 and mounted it inside the hood line. I did have to trim a bit of the plastic rad cover but it was well worth it.
Like I said just post if your interested and I will have pics up tomorrow when I can get time in the daytime

Here's something to wet your appetite till tomorrow though it's too dark to get the car but shows the effect nicely.

What kind of LEDs did you use, high flux Cree brand or Luxeon 1 watt LEDs?
Looks great by the way. Hit me up on e-mail...

I'm using RL5-R8030 Super-Red LED's the have a nice viewing range but still put off a good amount of Lumen. The specs can be found here

It just has a proprietary on board controller to keep cost down. What you see in the vid is what you get. With an about 6 feet of wire, a rocker switch, and lens to custom mount on your vehicle. The unit runs on 11-15V and is fully waterproof.
I just wanted something that would look better than the nonsense that is available now at a below $100 price tag.

Can you a circuit board small enough to fit in a 1:18 model?

Thats a whole nother ball of wax. The LEDS I have are way too big for such a project much less a circut board witch would have to be remotely mounted anyways. How many LEDS would you want? I believe the smallest you could get is maybe 5 so the light smoothness would be tough. The cheapest way to go is buying one of these and transferring the LEDS to the lense but it will be tricky.

Yeah don't bother andy-kitt, I tried the same thing on my model once. I saw the Varad led on ebay and bought it, but when I opened it up it had SMD (Surface Mount Diodes) and were like SO difficult to unsolder and hard as hell getting them to hook up to wires. I damaged one of the itty bitty LEDS in the process.
Best bet, buy one of the Knight Rider models on ebay that have a scanner already and put the scanner in yours...
Of course if you were gonna do this it would make more sense to just keep it the way it is as sold on ebay. I think its made in Japan.

I have spare LED circuit boards from when I converted 1:18 ERTL models, but that scanner operates differently from the new KITT.
All I want is say 5 LEDs, no. 1 lights up, then 1&2 lights up, then 1,2,3 lights up, 1,2,3,4 lights up, 1,2,3,4,5 lights up, 2,3,4,5 light up, 3,4,5, light up, 4,5 light up & then just 5, and repeats back again.
Is this easy enough to do?

Easy = NO
So you want a controller more than anything. Your going to have to be educated in electronic operations with rectifiers, capacitors, and diodes to make a working piece. From what your telling me it's going to be quite an extensive task. I don't have your model so I don't know what kind of space limitations your going to have but you can bet you are going to need a lot of room. Try and find a electronics guru to help you out and don't e afraid to learn. Good Luck though.

I only have basic skills for making lights, not scanning lights, that is why I asked, thanks for coming back to me to say that you can't help, it is much appreciated.

I can do red, blue, purple, green, and white. I working on Amber/Yellow but every LED they send me of the specific Lumens I'm wanting looks too orange.

Well I have a new contract with Electrovert to start manufacturing the light bars and have the diffusers all cut. My "SKANNER KITT" includes the Lightbar, Three feet of wire, Two light diffuser lenses, and a quality rocker switch. I can do red, blue, purple, green, and white. I working on Amber/Yellow but every LED they send me of the specific Lumens I'm wanting looks too orange. It's $99.99 and comes with you can send payment to
mpetermanpaypal@hotmail.com and specify color and address in paypal comments. Thanks!

What's the length of the scanner? I wonder if it'll fit in a hood scoop?

As mentioned before it is 15" inches long and 1" inch wide and tall.
