Well the character doesn't necessarily have to die cause the actor did, it's been done before where the character lived after the actor passed. So if the producers decided to ignore the KR2000 movie, or re-imagine the series, the character could exist. I personally don't see a point to it, and should just leave the character alone, regardless if it follows the KR2000 time line. For one to honor the actor that portrayed him.
