Knight4000 your right the should have showed that. It would make KR so much more intresting. Or in Trust Dosent Rust when Micheal was hearing Deven's story they should have don a flashback. But Richeard B. was dead in the thrid or forth season.

WRONG. (Justin, Richard Basehart died in 1984, so technically it would have been the beginning of the third season, but what difference would that have made? Wilton was YOUNGER when KARR was created.)

Yeah, it would have been interesting for us to find out how KITT and KARR came into existance, but actually, it would have played out really boring on TV. The only truly interesting potential aspect most likely, would have been KARR's activation. Otherwise, it would have been like watching a soap opera from the back history that you get in the show. No action, lots of dialogue, and technobabble, not much more than that.

Some things were just best left for fan fiction.

KI wrote a great fanfic about KARR and KITT's creation.

If you can find the novel written by Glen Larson based on the episode "Trust doesn't rust" it tells the story behind KARR's creation. He was designed to be a new military weapon for future Vietnam-like conflicts. Rather than leading thousands of our men into slaughter why not send in a bunch of sentient vehicles to do the fighting. When the project was canned by Uncle Sam, Wilton took it private and tried to alter it to fit a crime fighting role by putting the, KARR's, CPU into a non-descript vehicle that could blend in with urban settings. KARR, as we know, never worked right, I think the novel blames it on him still retaining his old combat programming. The novels really flesh out some of the concepts and ideas never realized in the show.

The novels also tell a fictionalized version from Larson's mind, not necessarily what the original writers of the episode had intended. So, take that into account when using the novels. It is one case where the creator's ideals didn't necessarily match the episode writers, and could have had a different outcome altogher.

KARR worked just fine. He just had different programming: self preservation versus preservation of human life. Not necessarily left over from combat training. THAT came from the show.

Because they might not even have KARR in the movie. Not to mention, it might take a little more time to catch us up to speed with that, rather than providing a few sentences of dialogue.
