Ha! And you all thought TOS never used green screen

Post by KnightINSTINCT » Mon Nov 17, 2008 6:33 am

Trust Doesn't Rust - it's the showdown between KITT and KARR. You're going to see in scenes with Michael and Bonnie the same light colored car passing by on more than one occasion. Now my question to all of you is this: did it look more believable then (without the HD filming)?

Just watched again, and my gosh, the pretend driving is done so much better.

It's not difficult is it? Pay attention Justin et. al.
The key to driving acting: look at the road once or twice in a scene. When it's not your turn to speak, watch the road.

Otherwise we all think that KI3T is driving and Michael's just pretending to look macho.

I don't think that was green screen.

You have to remember that shows like this, the cars were pulled around with trailers and what-not, to simulate driving as the screens for that time were bad... just look at the Dukes of Hazzard... you want to see bad green screen, there you go.

This is too good. More then likely KITT was being pulled by a trailer, and the car that is shown many times is just different scenes cut together, from different takes. They may not have been able to get many cars for the traffic, so they used the same car in different takes.

Also. The good pretend driving works better as the car is hooked up to the trailer, either:
1) The car being pulled was a full working car, and as it is being pulled the front wheels of course move with the road, turning the wheel, and gives the perception that you are really driving.
2) It's a buck on a trailer, and being able to see the road in front of you, you can turn the wheel, giving the perception of real driving.

Both of which could be done for the new show.

And I could be totally wrong, and I'm not afraid to mention it... but shows of this time didn't have great green screens, and these shots are good shots.

I'm sure that at some points they did use green screen but the thing is that they didn't flat out abuse it like they have in the new show.

Did they even have green screen then? I think it was still in its infancy around that time and was probably expensive. I'm thinking they might have used rear projection where they actually project the background onto a large screen.

Projection! That's what I was trying to remember. Dukes had projection screen not green screen.

However, I don't think this was projection either. Projection looked too fake and the lighting was off quite a bit of the time.

I don't dispute that they did use either in Knight Rider... I just think this instance is trailer rigged.

However the original series did it, it was certainly more realistic and believable when you watched it, both from an acting and special effects point of view. It's rather ironic how this many years later and having better technology available, that this show looks more fake than a show made over 20 years ago. There isn't almost any driving shot in this new show that doesn't look entirely done with green screen, and badly at that. There is something to be said when they use real cars in the action sequences and show a real car driving. There is no comparison in how much better it stands out and reflects in the quality of the show, versus the almost cartoonish look of the green screen effects. This is just yet another reason why this show isn't working.

I am pretty sure that they used some projection shots on more than one occassion on TOS. Just the way David bounces around and looks like he is actually driving is what makes it so good.

I didn't really notice the same car passing by. In fact, there were no duplicate background scenery shots at all. And I'm all but certain that green screens (first used as blue screens) were NEVER used in the original series, same thing with projection. Projection screens were used a lot on sit-coms for obvious reasons and I think they refer to it in television as "Poor Man's Process." Thankfully, the stunt cars were being towed or actually driven in Knight Rider. It's something we take for granted until we see the green screens in use. There's no passion in green screens!

I agree that it is too fake. i mean come on!!! After so many years and it looks like that. Mike actually looks in front of him like he is not driving at all although we see the road pasing by quite quickly. He could be more realistic and they should seriously have more real driving scenes. That's what this show is all about. In the original series things were much better refering to driving and of course Larson's basic idea: ONE MAN CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE, Helping the innocent and weak around the country.

I love the stock footage at the end of the clip as "KARR" goes over the cliff. If memory serves me correct it was borrowed from the film 'The Car'.

That clip did not contain one green screen moment.
Green screen was never done on TOS.
Sue was right green screen in the 80's was only used for weather men and 'some' movies.

I used to work at a local NBC station as the camera operator for the 5,6, & 10'o clock news casts.
I was also in charge of chroma setting the green screen.
Green screen would have looked SO obvious on the Original series because the 'chroma outline' would have been all to obvious.

TOS series was guilty of using miniture models, kid actors, and stunt drivers with chronic spine injurys, but they never used green screen.

The shot in trust dosen't rust was shot with car on a trailer with a film crew being pulled by a truck/trailer thing.

It was, but I always thought it was kinda funny how hasselhoff constantly rocks the wheel back and forth.
