I'd just like to point out that nanotechnology does not "transform", it "shapeshifts". Transformation, especially in Transformers implies that these pieces pre-exist in the car and are simply concealed away. They are not just magically conjured out of thin air and if you watch the explaination of the T-1000 in Terminator 2, Cameron did an outstanding job by conveying a line from Arnold that says(paraphrasing here) "No, machines have too many moving parts, complexities. It can only assume other shapes, form knives, stabbing weapons." etc. etc.

Nanotechnology assumes other shapes, colors, densities, and forms, it does not create complex mechanics that involve creating several seperate moving parts on the fly. It shapeshifts and that's what the backdoor pilot did right, it showed that the car's shapes actually changed into something else along with the colors. If they had shown the scanner or spoiler actually being built up over time like say microscopic legos, then it would have really been on target to what nanotechnology is supposed to do. Look at other examples of nanotech used in fiction from episodes of Batman the Animated Series, to The Batman, to Superman The Animated Series, Transformers Animated, Star Trek, the list goes on and on. They mostly follow the same general concept that nano-tech shifts shape, form, and color, but cannot create complex moving parts or advanced movement of mechanics like say a 747.

The backdoor pilot treated nanotechnology more realistically. Fault the spoiler coming from thin air if you must but at least the concept was based on real-world applications where as this new hybrid is absolutely unbelievable and "transforming" the way ILM created it works for Transformers because they're FROM ANOTHER PLANET where our rules of technological limits don't apply to them. We don't know how their technologies work that simply mimic our own but are not exactly the same mechanics that we use ourselves.

Just something to keep in mind the next time you want to play the, "They can do it because its nanotechnology" card.

It's not nanotechnolgy as we understand it to be, it's a mimiced concept of it.

Hello KRO Forum members. Well I have been a long time fan of Knight Rider but I'm a first-time poster.

I had a chance to watch the first episode (thanks HULU) of the new Knight Rider series and I have to lean more towards the side of the first Poster. Now take in account that I liked the 2 Hour Special months back. I really thought the two hour had promise and I was even more excited to learn that the show would be returning in some form.

The first 10 minutes made me want to cringe I almost turned it off. The CGI has got to go. Watching how KITT transformed was not only a waste of time, it couldn't look any more fake than it did in that episode. I really hope that the next few episodes will change my opinion, but so far I have lost a lot of faith in how the new series will be handled.

It almost seems like they took everything that could make a good show and fell flat on all accounts. Think about it for a minute, There's Technology, Special effects, Sexy moments, Sexy women and over the top action sequences. But having all these elements does not equal a hit show. The thing that killed it for me (besides the stripping scene) was when the baddie was preparing the syringe and it couldn't be more fake having an extremely large looking syringe, and the florescent chemical was totally unnecessary. A simple syringe and chemical bottle would of sufficed. The idea they took it to an extreme and made it stand out really just seems like shallow writing.

Maybe im nitpicking this one scene, but the entire episode did this. Another one that stands out is watching KITT transforms into "Attack-Mode" and as KITT is jumping over the bad guys, you see an illuminated "KR" Symbol was really not needed. For a car that in some reality needs to be covert, having a large "KR" symbol gleaming out for all to see is not needed.

WOW! The episode has been avaliable for like 24 hours and already we've got this many comments.

Right... finally I got to watch the new episode entitled Knight In Shining Armor and to tell you the truth it was a major disappointment! The intro wasn't very catchy but that doesn't even begin to cover all of the stupid nonsense they managed to shoot in 40 minutes. I was very excited about the new series and was led to believe that some major changes was going to be made since the pilot, but no! Instead we got this wierd futuristc episode with WAY TOO much computer animations (CGI) and awkward lines like: " - Michael Long? Sounds like a pornstar!" And Mike Traceur which is now referred as Michael keep saying "dude" all the time!
The Turbo Boost wasn't good either and the missile that hits the car, come on! The car is on fire for like 10 minutes and the passengers who happen to be Mike and Sarah starts undressing to cool their bodies. Sarah goes: " - Don't get any ideas!"

I can't help referring to the original series with Hasselhoff but bare with me. It was so much simpler back then. The Turbo Boost was done without CGI and everything was so real and mechanic. The new series has too many computer animation which makes it so unreal!

I can go on forever with this and there are so many things going on my mind that I'm not sure of how to continue this post: nevertheless, we gave the new Knight Rider a shot but after watching this I have my doubts about the show getting any viewers at all. With 24 and other upcoming TV shows the new Knight Rider is going to have a hard time beating their viewers!
Michael: Kitt what matters to me is who you are not what you look like. Sure we don't have the car so we can't turbo boost so we can't go over 200 miles an hour but it was all icing on the cake anyway

Yeah, the idea is good but the execution is ridiculous. The sexual innuendos had to have been the worst. When they started to strip in the car I couldn't help but think of that line from Galaxy Quest... "I see you managed to get your shirt off". It was the beginning of the episode and already they had stars half naked.

The two science geeks, aren't working out either. First you have the hot asian chick who wears really low cut dresses and acts like a preteen middle school student. All of her dialog was just plain stupid. "That was awesome", "Owned", "And I speak nine languages, we should make a baby". My god, SHUT UP! I half expected her to say "TeeHee" after every innuendo. Billy, the other nerd is just a walking cliché. He's extremely smart, really nervous and always complains about being unappreciated. I was surprised he wasn't wearing glasses.

The music was really annoying too. It didn't stop playing throughout the entire run of the show and it was the same techno tune with no real variety.

Oh whatever. What does Michael Knight do with everyone he met? "Hi, I'm from the Foundation of Law and Government." People eventually in each episode knew he was up as an investigator, and they identified the car he was driving in. Forget the rogue B.S.. The car is black because it's cool....I used to think because it was a fed car, and maybe it is still for that reason. But overall, the car looks good in black.

I respect what you're saying because you care about the outcome of the show. I'm a fellow NOOB here on KRO, and I have to tell everyone of you that if this show didn't disappoint as much as it did, we (NOOBS) probably wouldn't have registered as bulletin commenters after watching the season premiere.

NBC really needs to hear this out. If it tasted bad, just throw it out. Remember, GST told us it was going to be the kind of show that will speed through the whole 40 minutes. It's sickening. And probably why it's sickening is we want it so bad and are afraid it may just go after this season opener. Everyone, let's not compare this show to the original for right now. Be honest with what you really liked, and didn't like.

I don't dispute Kitt's color or the fact that Michael Knight in TOS did identify himself from FLAG, but I dont remember often Michael going up to people saying "Hi, I'm from the Foundation of Law and Government, that black car over there is named KITT and not only can he talk and drive himself, he has a bunch of options and abilities you could never think of". I mean come on, think about it, You have to admit that Turbo boast was way over the top CGI that could of been approached another way. According to NEPS (I think that is his name) T.B. will be improved and look more natural, but the idea of having a bit Illuminated "KR" on the underbody of KITT makes Absolutely no sense no matter how you decide to look at it. The scene was very forced to show KITT's Turbo Boast ability that honestly could of been done in a better way or style.

Do you think that underbelly exists in Hero mode?

I wonder if GST knows that a car doing 300+mph with a flat underbody would fly into the air like a piece of paper, should have put a diffuser under there but then again Attack K3000 was probably designed by a six year old.

Personally I don't mind them trying to make the show "fun and sexy" at all. I'd MUCH rather they embrace the inherent campiness of the concept (like the original show eventually did) than suck all the fun out of it like the new Bionic Woman did.

But even a campy show has to be well made in order to be good. And the execution here just wasn't very good at all. The storytelling was sloppy as hell, none of it flowed very well, the tone shifted wildly from start to finish, and the dialogue was lifeless and generic. In fact, all the sloppiness and lazy writing actually made me feel like I was watching some cheap syndicated show from the 90s!

That said, there's still a lot of great eye candy to watch every week, so I'll keep tuning in for awhile (at least until something better comes along opposite it).

Well, I understand what a lot of you are saying.....

But I really enjoyed the premiere episode, although I think the Turbo Boost visual effect sucked badly.

I realize they are going for the basis of a "Matrix" movie style effect -- but it just doesn't work for the Turbo Boost
type of stunt. Turbo Boost was exciting because of its basis on reality. You were in awe at just how high off
the ground the stunt men would jump those old Pontiacs..... They need to forget the "Fast and Furious" look of this first Turbo (extreme closeup with tons of CGI / doesn't work) -- and create more of an old school look to it. I have high hopes though. The new cast is awesome. The writing is funny and lively..... Overall: Knight in Shining Armour = B+ Grade from me.
There ain't no E in Garth, damn it.

Actually I thought the buildup to the turbo boost, and zooming into the inner workings of KITT, was pretty damn cool and exciting.

I just hated how awful it looked once he blasted off into the air.

Hell, even the turbo boost out of the trash compactor in one of the original episodes looked more believable! lol

I liked it.

No, it wasn't perfect. Some of the artistic design choices were a bit odd...like the underbelly of the vehicle in 'Super-Pursuit' mode. My problem wasn't that the underbelly was 'solid.' That actually makes sense, in that a high-tech car would need to not look like a normal vehicle underneath. My problem is, why those letters? Knight Rider is the name of the show. Not the name of the car, the AI in the car, the Foundation, etc. So why use the initials KR?

Beyond that, yes, there was a large amount of willing suspension of disbelief. But then again, we are talking about the sequel to a show where, in the early 80's, a talking car was able to unlock a plain old door by using some kind of magic magnetic field. So the criticism against the new show isn't unique to the new show. If it makes KR 2008 stink, it also makes the original stink.

In general, that's what I'd say about all the criticisms of the new show I've seen. Questionable acting, over-the-top technology, etc.

In the end, though not perfect, I found it fun. And that's what drew me to the original show as a kid.

I say to the haters...could you at least give it a chance?

Why does it seems that almost no one on the internet is capable of liking anything anymore (at least when it comes to fans of existing franchises which still exist today)?

HOLY MOLY GUYS?! I am very glad to see so many replys and views. More so happy that I waited until now, almost 20 hours later to come back. None of us are bashing, so let's cool the tempers boys.

I really think the early replys did not understand almost all my comments. First off on the topic of sex. Trust me, been there, done that. Alot. My comments were based in storyline and storyline only. The scene of her showering outside, then going inside to greet her overnight lover waking up just to introduce the fact that she was a character and FBI agent. In just those 3-5 minutes they could have used the time more usefully. And yes even being a liberal, I find that a one night stand at her presumed age, and level of responsibility, would be an act of immaturity and lack of moral character, on the characters part. Yes, I have in fact had three 1 night stands, but I'm also a professional singer and it was in my stupid and naive 20's. Do we remember a manipulative Adrienne in TOS learned of K.I.T.T.'s secrets during pillow talk? But let me reiterate, it was a comment based on bad use of screen time. Itr would have been better used say on the mother's relationship before her death.

Someone mentioned Sex In The City, yes your right I didn't mind it, but it was also on cable, in an appropriate time slot. My 4 year old loves going up to my KITT and asking to see the woosh woosh. He does it to my black and tan '03 eclipse as well. Until he sees the front of the car and that it's not KITT. But do to the sexuality I won't let him watch just yet. Not appropriate for his age.

Knight Research is now supposedly sanctioned by the government, I'm sure that they would have a professional dress code. Put THAT IS A NIT PICK that didn't matter, but it also didn't lend itself to realism. The cute banter between Zoey and Billy was just that, some cute comedic relief.

NOW in the season opener, do we notice how Sarah begins getting undressed first? Sure the temperature is rising to beyond human tolerances, but also look forward to the storyline. Sarah is trying to get some "female intuition" feelings from Mike as well. Remeber he did just dissapear. So I imagine an eigth of her decision was based on trying to get a response from him, another was preparing for worst case scenario. Overall, she did it very profesionally and with modesty. Cause lets be honest most women do wear nice pretty undergarments. I believe most of that character's sex appeal will be from her intelligence. The rest of the sexuality during the show didn't bother me.

On the whole, my initial post was in relevance to how unrealistic it all looked. Couldn't find the post to quote but someone commented on the realism of SPM. Yes, it was totally unbelievable and made K.I.T.T. look like S.H.I.T.T. Then with the addition of the red neons as compared to K.I.3.T.'s blue. But at least they took the time to build a mock up of the body and film the panels with moving parts. CGI just doesn't look real. I understand what their saying about the nano technology. It's the same as an unbelievable MBS. (Loving the acronyms!) But they've done a really nice job of explaining the deflecting of bullets thist time around. But did we really pick right back up after the 2 hour? For educating us as to this new Knight research facility? Michael getting out of the car and really starting to understand what he's gotten himself into. "What is this place, the bridge of the starship Enterprise?"

I AM NOT LOOKING FOR THE NEW SERIES TO BE JUST LIKE THE OLD ONE! Leave my Knight Rider alone. I want this Knight Rider to be as good as it can be for the new generation. Now I pose a question I would like to hear a response to. Is that Fast And The Furious way of filming cars appealing to the younger generation? The almost (the only way I can describe it as) "cartoon like way" of going inside the exhaust pipe and through the engine? If so I'll shut my mouth and give justification to the grey hair that HAS sprouted in the past year.

The HUD very very justified. Us OG remember being able to see the real dash that actors could actually touch. we want you guys new to Knight Rider to have a cool dash. Not just a stock one with HUD's, and a voice modulator that you will work on building for 10 years as we did. We want you to see what it's like seeing your... (gulp) K.I.T.T. flying fifteen feet through the air, the actual sun beaming off the body panels and windows as it soars. Just, you will get better editing of the aftermath of the car landing. When you see Michael Tracuer driving does that really look like what the world looks like out your back windows? I do hope that K.I.T.T. and /or David make an appearance for Mike to have a reason to say "Why did you cheap out on my dash?"

It's small but the use of an automated medical tape device? You cut off your finger and see how much blood is all over the place! Things like that I say to illustrate the writing needs to get better.

But let me nitpick once. Did Justin really need to cock his head over in every shot inside K.I.3.T. so that we could see the GT500 logo with Carroll Shelby's embroidered signature. I was not trying to nitpick when I noticed it but I know Carroll's signature, as he's been a personal friend of my family for many years.

Some of you are right there is some nitpicking going on with other things not involving K.I.3.T. and those are just inherent. I do like a clip that I saw of Mike asking "just how many people are supposed to know the car talks?"

Someone did a really nice job in a reply of going through the nano tech. Just onscreen with whirring body panels, they gave to onscreen action look very much like live action transformers. You forget about the nano tech. It changing it's size into a truck with 2 people in the bed, then changing with the people ending up in the seats just was bad. We hope they let that go, and stick to real stunts with real cars. Want the attack mode K.I.3.T., Fine. Then take a real Mustang, cut it up, film it and edit it.The finished Attack Mode does look mean. It's the transition to get there does not look real.

I so badly wanted to be entertained, but I don't know anything I didn't when I started watching. In fact I'm friggin confused. I will watch it again right now, and look for parts I like, to find something in it for me to keep watching. Just to support the franchise.

All The Best

Attack K3000 was probably designed by a six year old.
HAHAHAHAHA! I couldn't have said it better myself!

Please go to the mainpage of KRO and browse down until you find the screenshots of Attack Kitt. They have some very good close-ups on the car guess what. Some of the addons has been NAILED to the chassis, for instance the big wing at the back has probably 10 nails on each side. The wide bodykit isn't good either if you have a close look at it. The paint seem to have no bascoat at all which leeds you to believe that the whole car is made out of plastic! Besides whats the deal with those stupid blue lights beneath the car when it turbo boosts? For the record, if a car like that is to turbo boost without any CGI it will result in a bad landing which would probably reck the whole chassis. The tires at the back are increadibly ugly too. They have no tracks at all so... I wonder how it handles in rain!
Michael: Kitt what matters to me is who you are not what you look like. Sure we don't have the car so we can't turbo boost so we can't go over 200 miles an hour but it was all icing on the cake anyway

Ranting does good how?

Yes I do agree the episode was lacking and they began to put to much hate into the first episode...It almost seems like the only person whose on Mikes side are the Gramens. Even KITT didn't seem all to happy with Mike. But it'll work itself out in the end. It always does.

Wow - how bad can this new show be?

Post by ericole » Sat Sep 20, 2008 10:18 am

Check out the iTunes review for the consensus of all that's wrong. I was a HUGE fan of the original, but am very disappointed in what they've done with this.

My thoughts:
I think the new technology added into the show is cool, but I think it is carried WAY too far. Not only is KITT updated, but he is also a Transformer. This wouldn't be so bad if he didn't seemingly create matter from nothing. A mustang and a full size Ford truck do NOT have the same amount of material, nor do they have the same wheel size. Come on - you are using technology in the show, in a current time setting - don't also mix magic.

Also, it seems like the writers must be a mix of sci-fi junkies and T&A lovers. EVERY scene seems to have some overt sexual reference - if people are not simply taking their clothes or jumping into bed. Good grief! Trust me, the show would be fine without this mess. The original Knight Rider was, for many seasons! You could have called the original KR a family show, this one definitely is not. That's too sad.

I Saw this show on hulu and I Gave it a big dissappointing thumbs down for me too

You knw the first knight rider really had, actual charm and style and the actors did it good with their roles and the car was cool and this remake looks like it was made from an after school special, a truly endless after school special, the only good thing about this mess is how kitt was turned into a Ford F-150, otherwise that's about it

The Ford Mustang may have been an icon car of it's own right, but it does not hold a candle to the pontiac trans-am

and it's hard to believe that one of my favorite actors bruce davison is in this piece of junk, he's wasted in this thing.

A New Chevy Camaro would be much better, keep the morphing CGI though.

A True disgrace to the original, the pilot was nice, but this premiere is a disaster, let's hope this is the end of the knight rider franchise, the original was good and brilliant and well written, the rest have been trash.

Ok, I wasn't going to say anything but........

If you take a look at the technology behind KI3T's nanotech shell, it is totally feasible that it could stretch, replicate, whatever it takes to form the necessary skin of an F150. All he would really need is to have frame panels that were mechanically actuated to fold out to form the frame for the F150 shell and back again.

Trust me, the show would be fine without this mess. The original Knight Rider was, for many seasons! You could have called the original KR a family show, this one definitely is not. That's too sad.
This isn't the early 80s. There is nothing overly sexual in this show even compared to most stuff on TV. Why are you so concerned about this? Sex is a part of life, get used to it. There was nothing inappropriate for kids in the first episode.

I, too, am afraid I have to agree (at least so far). I am not talking about any of the effects or technology here, but the tone and level of quality of the first episode. I watched it and got the impression that everything the show had to offer was crammed into the first five minutes. I do not understand why the show can't retain the spirit of the original by being fun, yet have a more serious tone at the same time. Watching the first episode, I have the impression that in order to be escapist entertainment, nothing at all can be plausible. There were many parts where I felt the acting was so unbelievably terrible that it killed any sense of suspense or danger. Yes, it was fun an adrenaline-packed, which is good, but it's not enough in & of itself. I'm sorry, but if the level of quality is going to remain like this, the show may as well be animated, because I feel that it would work better as a cartoon.

Then again, I'm one of the few on the board who likes Season 4 of the original series mainly because of its slightly more serious and darker tone. Hell, even Knight Rider 2000 had good, serious acting. It just suffered from a lousy script and lack of features for the Knight 4000. This is not to say I am bashing the production because it's new and I can't accept change; I am also in the minority for liking the backdoor pilot. Yes, it may have felt a bit watered down in terms of action, but at least the tone of it was more serious and believable than the first episode. This was when reality was still a consideration. Now it appears as if that's been deliberately thrown out the window and that is pretty much the problem I'm having.

However, yes, I've still only seen the first episode so my complaint may be premature here, and I still intend to watch and do want the show to succeed. But I certainly feel that this production is going to do nothing to give respect to the franchise and will ultimately only make the original series more beloved.

The Ford Mustang may have been an icon car of it's own right, but it does not hold a candle to the pontiac trans-am
Yeah, sure..... Whatever.
Care to compare the sales failure of the Pontiac Trans Am (to be a viable, current model) to the over 8 million Mustang's sold over its 40+ years of continuous, successful sales?

I think not.

Both cars are American Icons. But one is a part of history.... the other is a legendary sales (and current) success.

Don't ever compare a P.O.S. Ford Mustang to a Trans Am. It is apples and oranges, to hell with "production" and what have you, this is about history. Its like making a squeal with a different main actor. And for the record if they had not stopped producing the T/A it would be far superior to the Mustang. I have a 00 T/A WS6 (formula) the updated Kit if you will and it looks and is much better and would have looked a lot better in this "Makeover". And for the record all mustangs are girl cars and Kit is supposed to be a bad ass car. Cant have a girl car playing this role.
