KITT's New Interior

Post by Deferranfan1 » Thu Dec 13, 2007 1:57 am

Well from what we have seen from pictures it doesn't seem to be impressive at all. Especially for the technology we have available today. Maybe they are pulling our legs. But the only thing that looked decent was the stearing wheel. What gives to TV's no turbo boost buttons. The thing that made KITT well KITT was the red scanner, and the dash. Straight and simple that made that car. You take those two away and your don't have much. I don't mind the car they have chosen. Do I think it could be better yea I could. But it doesn't look to bad on the outside but the interior looks like some plain old stock thing. We all know the interior was not stock at all. Thoughts one the interior shots!

I posted a detailed rendering of the interior here: http://www.knightrideronline.com/phpbb/ ... hp?t=10441 but let me repost the URL

http://jalopnik.com/photogallery/KITTKn ... b1280x1280

It looks like the cars interior might just be completely tripped out when all the special effects and camera closeups are done.

Remember that during the filming of the original series, there wasn't really a complete fully functional dash in the cars. most of the close ups of Michael pushing the buttons were inserts shot later.

...and it looks like the KR2000-style Heads-Up Display in the windshield is one of the features, from that design. Also, the circular spaces for the gauges look to be screens, one for speed and rpm, and the other for radar and night vision... There's definitely more going on in that car than the shot from the press event would suggest.

What really cracks me up is that the basic interior design is over 40 years old. A majority of the elements in the Mustang interior are taken from the first gen. Mustang... seeing them using it for KITT is just odd.

I'm assuming that Ford wouldn't let them change any major elements of the car... including the completely ridiculous, low-tech dual round gauge pods. HUD is REALLY nothing special.... it has been around for years, if not decades. They can't pull the minimalist design card... because there is a freaking Mac keyboard under the dash... which brings up my next question... why would one of the world's most powerful AI supercomputers need a keyboard? Voice recog, anyone?

Color me unimpressed. Knight Rider in name only....

What's that console between the two rear seats? It looks like the dial of the Mach 5 from Speed Racer...

Well, remember the iPhone doesn't look like much, until you turn it on...

The keyboard is there for a reason.

From Ford's press release:
Working with Belker was Ted Moser of Picture Car Warehouse and 25 automotive specialists who, created six variations of the GT500KR. The ATTACK car features a new rear bumper cover, two-tiered spoiler, side scoops and custom rocker panels... not to mention a completely modified interior to accommodate creative needs, shooting and post production computer graphics. Very cool, I'm sure they will have some unique and creative stuff for our imaginations to be surprised with using computer graphics and animation. Although this stuff is cool, I would assume that the voice box is in between the circles in the dash and is the shifter not there b/c this is Remote KITT?

I thought the GT500KR was only manual, unless they did something with the other two cars to be auto?

Agreed. However in the article they do state that this was the only car where interior pics were allowed and this is the "remote controlled" one, not one of the "beauty shot" cars. Interior pics of the other two were not permitted, leading me to think the interior dash is different than this.

The large LCD screen built into the dash pillar between the 2 front seats intruiges me. I'm willing to bet that it will provide most of the pertinent controlls and information that the driver would need. I'm certain it would be touch sensitive as well. The visual I imagine is reminiscant of the old series Star Trek and The Next Generation. Where KITT had manual switches and knobs and tons of LED readouts like the old series Star Trek. With modern advances in technology a touch sensitive interface, ala The Next Generation is a more efficient method for displaying all Information and controlls for this new generation. As far as that keyboard goes, have any of you ever tried to type on a touch screen? very inefficient. Also, who cares where the keyboard comes from, the military uses exhisting technology all the time, no need to re-invent the wheel every time you build a new vehicle. Just my $.02 :D

Personally, I feel that they could have spent more time and imagination on the dashboard. If we are to go by looks, KITT's dash looks way superior to that, and by KITT, I mean the original.

Instead of being disappointed again and again by the details of this series, why not just accept that the design and directing of this production has failed, and will never deliver anything that remotely echos KITT and Knightrider?

Just forget about it, it's a cheap Ford commercial not a work of imaginative fiction.

I think the keyboard is there for maintenace and programming reasons. I don't think the driver would need it in the heat of battle or anything. But when it's in for repairs or upgrades the keyboard probably pulls out to gain access to the car's programming. The keyboard on the passenger side does remind me of the Devender from Viper.

That's my oppinion.

The keyboard is on the passenger's side, ergo it's not meant for Mike to use and is most likely a major function for Sarah to use in the search to find Mike Tracer early in the story and later for her to research finding things for him while he's busy driving. (Maybe there's a reason KITT can't do it himself, who knows).

I actually like the interior. They couldn't make that look like the old dash as it wouldn't look futuristic at all.

I'm still not even remotely happy about the whole Mustang bit..but at the least the interior shots will be okay to look at.

True, but maybe it extends to him when needed, like a 90 degree angle motion?

My eight year old son just noticed something... Wheres the gear stick??

And from me... I'm presuming it still has the flashing vox-box for when Kitt talks? it's a little hard to see what the dash really looks like from that angle.

I think the heads up display has some good potential, especially if they use it as the primary display system. I must say I'm not keen on the 2 red displays, but we really wont know how it all works and looks until we see the final product.

As for the car itself, it looks pretty good from a side and rear view.. but I don't like the front at all, it reminds me too much of the TKR 4x4's

I'm looking at this new Knight Rider as a merging of the old KR and the Viper show, which for me at least, does have some potential.

It amazes me how many assumptions everyone is making. The fact of the matter is, we have one shot of the remote control car's interior and a CGI rendering of the interior without it in action. Fact is, we don't know how the interior will play out once it is enhanced with onscreen special fx. As an above poster said, an iPhone isn't particularly impressive until you turn it on. The analogy to Star Trek's control panels is also apt. If you compare Sulu's old console station to Data's, there is a world of difference until you actually turn on Data's station and see all the buttons and lights.

How about, y'know...waiting for some actual in-movie footage of the dash in action before jumping to conclusions and hating?

Well that interior does not look all that space -age to me. I much prefer the old one with all the buttons. But who knows... its got voice-command

Man, everyone's so ready to hate the new show. Building up this much hate for it now will definately make you hate it when you see it. I'm going in with a low expectation, but an open mind.
