the proportions of that car are right, which is more than can be said for the last T/A which seemed to short and the nose looked like it had been chopped viciously

but looks wise, no that car is not right,

the closest physical incarnation of that shape i reckon is the cheverolet camaro, which as we saw in the A team, used to bare a resemblence at least in shadow (and the latest is simply a re interpretation of that shape)

Well, the present Chevy Corvette has similar lines to the old KITT, which is one of the many reasons why I have such a love for it.

The reason they the old Camaro had the same look at the T/A, was because they were made of the same body mold. The differences were in the styling.

KARR was supposed to look like KITT's evil twin. Both would end up looking evil if they were like that.

I had already put in my two cents but those cars just look too stupied for KITT. That blue one looks like it came from over seas and that siver one is just bad!
The company who made it tried to make the car look like a classic but it looks more like a mini van with a Poniac noise.

What car to use in movie?

Post by knightsofengland » Wed Aug 14, 2002 4:05 am

Hi people.
I just thought I would add what I was told recently. It may be way off but here goes. When speaking with Ian (Who is still in contact with David and family) he told me that David was thinking the new movie would be more like Knight rider 2000 and would not resemble the earlier cars or show. This is not what will work in my opinion. I think it is like Star Treck.. Bare with me I will explain. It took many atempts at re launching the star treck programs befor they found a combination which would work. Now with KR it was set back in 1982 but KITT was the car of the future. The problem we now have is that all us people who lived and breathed KR the first time round want them to bring it back just as it was. This is not really practicle because then KITT would not be a futuristic car any more as many of Kitts functions can now be found in many modern cars.. Like Voice recognition etc. So they have to re think the whole thing. Will it work this time? My guess is no not if they put kitt back into a 57 chevy..lol that was just silly but hey thats just my opinion. In truth they could re make the series as it was there are plenty of cars around for them to use. Ow and they did not distroy all the cars. GM supplied truck loads of body panels to repair the cars and in all filming only one was distroyed beyond repair during filming. Guess which one it is not hard...

Thanks for listning to my ramble

Hi!

Ok, first of all, what are you talking about with the Star Trek series? None have failed. They didn't do several to do it right, they got it right on the first time, and the second, and every single movie and series after that.

KITT still hasn't been achieved. Give him a new body that isn't too screwy, give him some cool new capabilities, and all is right with the world. KITT returns.

Remaking the series...why? That wouldn't go over well with anybody, because we remember the good old days, and screwing it up with the present is down right not good. Revisiting the 80's is nostalgic, but not great for the box office or the general viewing public.

Next, Glen Larson is writing the script, not Hasselhoff, and Larson didn't seem to like the KR2K route. While there will most likely not be original KITT bodystyle back, you might have the same feel of the pilot. There aren't plenty of cars around to replace the 82-86 Trans-Ams, that aren't going to take a long time to fix, not to mention, it would now stand out on the road. KITT was meant to blend in, while still being at the heighth of fashion.

As for the cars. Not many of them survived the filming. They were given fiberglass shells that were replaced after severe damage, over a frame. Some frames were adjusted for jumps, others for various other stunts. Only three of the original cars can be semi-verified as existing. (One in the UK, one bought by Mark's Custom Kits, and one 'hero' car at the Universal Lot.) They destroyed a lot of the vehicles, as you can see in David Hasselhoff's Looking For Freedom Video, where he has the turbo boosts that went wrong.

Just sharing a little bit of what we know from research, and a certain book that has been released.

Welcome to the board!

Hi and thank you for the welcome.

Well the people I have spoke to have mostly said that the first few Star Treck attempts were pritty lame but I am not a Treck fan so I really should not have past that comment but I was only going on what others had told me. Sorry if that was wrong.

Now to address a few points you made.

The cars int he looking for freedom video were re buildable with new pannels even the one which falls to bits. The car which was bent when Kitt lost his molecular shell is the only damages car which was not repairable. The shell you speak of was actually used over the top of VW buggys to give the apearence of Kitt. This was used in later seasons to acheve longer jumps as the car was much lighter. Actually it did not work to well as the car went up rather than any distance. The car in Universal is not a TV car either. There used to be a TV car on display a long time ago which is now in the posetion on Ian in th UK but is still owned by Universal. It was on display recently at the Newark Aerodrom. I have seen the car in Universal when it was on display and I can asure you this is the same car. It is the nuber 4 stunt car which was used mainly for shots of the car going in and out of the semi and for Ski mode. The car MCK worked on was an ex TV car shell but much of the rest of the car was either after market or just silly. ALL but 3 cars were sent to one breaking yard in the USA afetr filming ended. Many where sold as part cars (Not that they should have been) like MCK car and others were sold in bits like the bits moulded from an original we are seing now. The convertable on E-bay recently is a classic example. It was the TV car but nearly all the TV bits were gone. So Wild copper replaced them. This car is now owned by Peter Nelson in the UK and is set to have a KOE dash to replace the dash it has right now. I could go on but I think I have said to much already.

I am not trying to cause any arguments but people like Scott who may have met Ian last year and this year at the UK NAtionals will have seen parts from the KITT TV cars and pictures of them being wrecked after the show ended which will verefy what I have said.

in agreeance here K.I, most defo!

larson always said how disappointed he was with KR2K and TKR, so the fact that he's writing the script pleased me no end when i heard, and the fact that **he also** always wanted KITT to blend in back in the original series (heard he didn't like SPM because of this fact) is going to come across in the new movie too - which you are right again, isn't going to be a remake, this has already been stated. one of the few facts we have. personally, i'm ok with not knowing much about the new movie, i don't want to have anything spoilt for me, so if they decide to keep the car a secret i won't mind actually.

steve, i don't like star trek, personally i think the pilots for Voyager and Enterprise were fine, but the series didn't match up. (And the Enterprise pilot stole too many ideas form B5) This is just my opinion though, and all the star trek series have been very popular with many people, and none have failed, neither have the movies.

Zed, nice find

and welcome to you both

Larson didn't like "Spm" (sigh) I give up. Exactly how much power DID He have on that show anyway? If he didn't like it, He could've said no!
And as for Star Trek, They got it right the first time, and simply did it over and over and over again, until eventually, I (for one) got bored with it.)

Ian is one person, I am not denying that he has talked to Hasselhoff, and gotten the information. But...Glen Larson is yet another person, and there are people who have talked to him. There are people who have talked to Jack Gill, who had a pretty good idea where his stunt cars went. George Barris also knew where his Season 4 cars went. So I am just presenting the other side of the story. They were all shells that were destroyed. Because if you destroy one little part on landing, it's a pretty good bet that you twisted the whole shell on landing. Replacement parts would have solved a minor part of the problem. And really, the only time that there was damage was on the landings on Turbo Boosts. I am not arguing with you on any aspect of the vehicles, in fact, our facts sort of match up to a point. But basically, bringing back the '82 Trans Am for anything more than a picture shot...it's probably going to end up throwing the movie into a world of cgi hell. Things have changed in 20 years, and it is cheaper than shells.

Now, as for the others: Larson's involvement with the show was extremely limited after the pilot. He went off to do other things, he just kept his name in front, and remained on their staff, but he seemingly left most of the creative controls to the rest of his producers, directors and writers, what they said, went.

P.S., Steve, I guess we are having a misunderstanding about understanding.

lol.. yer I like that. Well like I say I can only go on what I have been told and I have no reason to disbeleave what I have seen and been told but like you say we are sort of on the same track with this one. Ian did also say that his thoughts (Not fact just his thoughts) were that Glen wouldonly edit the script and would not actually have anything to do with it's creation . Like I say just his thoughts not actual fact but I bet he is not far wrong.

Can I just say thank you to you for making me welcome here on your forum and I would like to invite any of you to visit my site and our forum should you wish. You are all welcome as I find people here very helpful and freindly not like someother forums I could mention...

Well, unfortunately, he is wrong on that aspect. Glen is writing the script, according to those who have talked to Glen, as well as published reports about it.

But otherwise, yep, same points, different views.

We just keep the messages and info flowin, off of what we know from our different published sources, and from those who have spoken to Larson and other sources. We generally like to go by published sources, because it is easier to prove, and fairly difficult to dispute.

You are definitely welcome here! And thank you for the warm invite! Just because we like to debate, does not mean that we do not welcome everybody into our community!

remember the way they kept spm a closley-guarded secret, and teased people with it as advertising, but not showing it, keeping KITT under a sheet?

remember the way they kept what the new godzilla looked like secret too? or e.t. back in the 80s?

you think they'll do this for the new kr car? i kinda hope so, it would be so cool to go not knowing what to expect when the film starts... adds loadsa excitement! and hopefully if they DO do this, no one in the press will try to ruin it for an "exclusive" by printing pictures of it like the british press did with godzilla and e.t. grr! why ruin the public's surprise and enjoyment for a quick buck?! if this does happen, hopefully it will be kept out of the board. Well, from a moderator's point of view, I can tell you that if it gets leaked, we can't keep it off the board, because if we suppressed all information, this board would suck. So I will tell you since now, we will try to mark it with a 'Spoiler' tag for all those who don't want to see it. Otherwise, ya takes yer chances.

Ahh yeah...chocolate and KR, it just doesn't get any better than this! Now, as for what KITT might appear like in the new movie, that is, his new body style, I think they'll end up blending a new body from the latest model T/A(even though it's no longer in production)with some of KITT's old trademark features, to satisfy both the old and new crowds, and in the process, make one pretty awesome car. I'll be posting some more pics on my site, including a rear end design. Maybe they'll be thinking similarly to my designs...or maybe not. We can't tell right now, but I think it'll look pretty good, whatever they do.

I suspect that they will keep the new car a bit of a "public secret".

The SPM car may not have been "officially" displayed until Juggernaut aired, but how many of us went through the teaser commercial frame-by-frame and had a pretty good idea what the car looked like?

Assuming that they will be releasing toy cars, T-shirts, etc. to coincide with the release of the movie, all of that merchandise will have to be designed, created, and distributed prior to the film. So the designs will get out. The trick for the marketing team is to let the car leak out a bit, but keep a few surprises for the film.

As for spoiling it on this board, I suspect that it will be discussed ad-nauseum before the movie. If you absolutely want everything to be a surprise when you walk into the theater, then realistically this is not going to be a safe place for you to visit.

Mike
