Michael Knight's fighting ability inconsistency

I watched the pilot episode yesterday, and while I thought about this before, I thought I'd bring it up here. How comes Michael took apart them dudes at the bar before being arrested, yet would come unstuck against somebody when fighting in the series? I mean, he took apart about six guys in the pilot but wouldn't get anywhere near that far in future episodes. He would perhaps knock out about two guys before getting hit behind the head and knocked out.

In reality, we could chalk this up to just different script writers but can you think of an explanation that would fit the KR universe?

Well lets not forget that they were at a bar. They had already had a few drinks by the time he arrived on the scene to whoop them.

I used to think the same thing sometimes about why his fighting ability was so great in the pilot yet in merchants of death when he was up against the same number of guys he should have been able to hold his own against them.

In the book,Lonnie has an added scene where Michael gets clobbered by them and thats how he gets dragged to jail. The book version of Knight of the Phoenix is very interesting by the way. Each of the 4 books I've read have additional scenes that were never filmed.I was told they were ideas that the other autor besides Glen wrote up to make things a bit more interesting.

I have thought this too. But remember, we didn't actually see him fighting. So who knows, someone could of helped him, or he could of hit them with chairs or something.

But i like Knight Racers theory - they were probably a bit drunk when they came to Michael. And you know what fighting is like when someone is drunk. Slow and not much accuarcy!

Michael was a soldier so he should have learnt a few fancy lethal moves, anyway. Instead he kept getting knocked out by an obvious punch.

From a storyline perspective, I would have to say that the guys Michael took on were your average blue collar COMTRON truck drivers, not experienced fighters. Why he doesn't seem so experienced in other episodes is perhaps because he never practiced his training since his time in the military, thus losing some skills he once acquired... I'd have to watch the Pilot again, but I took it as Michael only learning a couple of fancy moves as opposed to being a fully-trained blackbelt, for example. There's also the option that Michael was simply exaggerating in the prison cell, too.

As for lethal moves, even in life or death situations Michael doesn't kill, hence why he (barely) ever carried a gun. The couple of times he did that I remember ("Knight Of the Phoenix" and another early episode when he busted cocaine dealers) it was merely for scare tactics to help him round up a bunch of criminals at once.

It's obviously the Foundation's policy to use non-lethal methods as a means to solve cases, which is why K.I.T.T. was programmed not to take a human life and why the whole K.A.R.R. fiasco was such a disaster. How much sense would it make for Michael to kill when the Foundation went through all that trouble to make sure that K.I.T.T. can't?

Sorry, when I said lethal I didn't mean literally. "Cool" or "firm" may have been better words. Just something to emphasise his military skill. I guess the cheesy and repetitive one-two kick was the closest we got.
