KNIGHT RIDER VS HARDCASTLE&MCCORMICK

Post by BABARACUS83 » Wed Jan 07, 2004 12:33 am

THESE TWO SHOWS WENT UP HEAD TO HEAD IN 83-85.MCCORMICK EDGED IT OUT IN RATINGS WHY? HOW COME KNIGHT RIDER WAS NEVER A TOP TEN SHOW OVERALL LIKE THE A-TEAM(WHICH I LOVE ALSO)? I LOOKED AT VARIOUS RATINGS OF THE 8O'S. KNIGHT RIDER FINISHES IN THE TOP 30.
DON'T YOU THINK DANIEL HUGH KELLEY'S CHARACTER(MCCORMICK) BEARS A RESEMBLANCE TO DAVID HASSELHOFF?

As KITT hinted, could you please turn off your caps lock, it hurts the eyes and is usually considered shouting.

Welcome to the board btw!

I'm not sure of the answers to your first questions either because I'm not too familiar with when H&C aired and what it was up against, it may have had an easier time slot than KR (it was up against Dallas after all) However if you asked the majority of people today if they know either show (kr or H&C), I think they would know Knight Rider more. I guess Knight Rider in a way wins in the end.

And I guess they kind of look similiar, in the way that tall males with 80s white boy hair all looked similiar.

Come to think of it, has there ever been another show/movie/whatever about a former judge who brings aboard a former convict to fight crime? (Never mind the fact about the judge getting the convict a fast and unique car.)

If you want to put some spin on it, we can always say that they (ABC) blinked: H&M moved away from its 8:00 Sunday slot while Knight Rider stayed put. To paraphrase Michael, "In head-to-head competition, The Coyote would always chicken out."

And don't forget he never gets the Road Runner and ends up falling off a cliff and getting crashed by an Acme anvil. :P

For those who dont know, Hardcastle and Mccormick was ABC's answer to Knight Rider on NBC. The ratings in the Sunday time slot for Knight Rider were better from 83-84, but H and M did manage to make an appearance in the top 10 during its first season, something KR never could do....

Despite its ratings success, H and M is hardly syndicated these days and is very hard to find. Brian Keith's suicide has turned a lot of people off to the show, which in turn only ran 66 episodes.

The show itself had a good format, Daniel Hugh Kelley was very cool and had a following from his soap days. The coyote is one of my favorite vehices. There was not one episode that did not have the coyote jump over something. While the car didnt have any special features, it looked cool to drive.

I watch my episodes from time to time. What the show was really about was friendship between the judge and Mccormick. Still one of the best cop shows out there IMHO and does not hold a candle to the crap on television today.

...just imagineing the '80s David Hasselhoff in the driver's seat in that shot. I don't think the image would have really changed much at all.

i can add a little to this, as i am a big H&M fan as well..

your comments about the delorean based coyote are correct, to a point.... the coyote pictured above is the gen 1 coyote which was a manta montage, the gen 2 coyote, was based off a delorean (full dmc interior and basically coyote like panals on the exterior)

heres 2 pics, one of the gen 1 coyote from the side and one from the gen 2 coyote from the side, i have some real pics of the gen 2 coyote as i saw it at mgm studios back in 1991 but i dont have them accessible right now (im living in florida, they are up in indiana in a photo album)

the whole purpos of the second coyote was brian keith's inability to get in and out of the first gen coyote, and in fact, i have seen an episode (i think its one where mccormick gets intentionally arrested for speeding, so he can talk to some guy in jail for the judge) anyway, mark lets the judge out, and you can clearly see the door close (gen 1 coyote) which, while i know they did open and close, i dont think you were supposed to see, kind of a KR glitch....ive also seen the coyote appear on the show without the "Coyote" letters (its in the pilot episodes opening credits like that and the chase during the pilot where mccormick steals the car)

one more tidbit of info.... i have seen, and i dont recall the movie, but the second gen coyote was in it and it was run over by a semi and blown up or something (which was once told was the last h&m episode, but that wasnt the case, the coyote blew up at the end of one h&m episode but later reappeared due to leprachons a few eps later, a few before the final)

also, does anyone ever watch the show Las Vegas, not the robert urich show from the 80s but the new one, with the younger guy who is head of security or something, and drives a yellow 69 camaro 'vert (nash bridges ripoff, lol)

anyway a few weeks ago there was an episode with a corrupt politition who was preaching family values, and then going away from the public eye and gambling in the casino, he owed $3M and drinking, sex, etc, well anyway that pollitian was none other than Daniel Hugh Kelly.

In my opinion rating are subjective and based on the fickle interests of the public at large. The hair, that 80's hair. Were all trying to forget those days. Nice call on H&M. That's what I call watching for the details. Errors in editing don't always make it a bad show. Sometimes it endears it to the public, and the public make the ratings

Hardcastle and McCormick was among the great shows of the 80's. As my username implies I am a avid fan of both Knight Rider and Airwolf, but H&M was good action show too, it never had the following of the other Cannell shows such as the A-Team or Hunter, but it was a good action show in its own right.

Does anyone on the list have any H&M tapes? I only have 3 episodes that I taped in the late 80's. I have about 80 KR episodes on tape if anyone would like to trade.

i used to have a LOT, they used to show it on WGBO channel 66 in chicago until it went spanish in the mid 1990s, i think i have 4 or 5 episodes left, most got taped over by the dukes of hazzard when it went back on TNN, and then knight rider, but most of my KR episodes are on their own new tapes...

I have about 54 of the original 66 broadcasted during the 1983-1986 run on ABC.

I'm missing about 4 from each season, I would even take syndicated episodes at this point to finish my set just to have watched them all.

If there is a press photo on EBAY I am usually purchasing it, as next to Knight Rider, H and M is my next favorite.

My email is scifitvbooks@aol.com if anyone can provide me a list of what episodes they have so I can collect the 12 I am missing.

Ahh the good old days of WGBO "Super 66" Anyone that lived in Chicago during the 80's and early 90's would remember that station. It was a low budget station, but they had a lot of good shows. They were the first to show Re-runs of Knight Rider back in 1986, and then in 1990 they pulled it to show H&M. Also in their lineup was Dallas and Mommas Family lol. And who could forget the weather report.....which looked like it was made on an etch-a-skech.

Even though I have KR on DVD's I will sometimes still watch my tapes from WGBO just for the silly 80's commericals!

Always wanted to build a fan site for H and M....but we are in the minority, since H and M wont make it on DVD anytime soon or into major syndication which means new fans really can't enjoy the show and old timers like me :) can't get fresh copies of episodes.

Mostly what is cut are the scenes of Mark and Hardcastle timing each other and the basketball games....

Some nice pictures...

i never really understood the whole stop watch thing, until one episode where hardcastle turns to mccormick and says "your out of shape"

i think they were timing their pulses, or somehting like that... and i remember one episode where mccormick beat hardcastle and then a guy, handcuffed in the front, sitting in the back of a cop car, beat hardcastle, and hardcastle grabbed the $20 back from mccormick

funny *?$#

i also liked the judges 1964 vette convertible with "DA Judge" on the plates, which i htink was wrecked in ep 4 or 5 by the guy mentioned above

oh and does anyone remember the judge's funny T shirts?

"theres no plea bargoning in heaven"
"hunt 'em, hear 'em, and hang 'em"

there were a few others but those are the 2 i remember
