Devon Miles???

I think it would be great to have some kind of tribute somewhere in the movie to Edward Mulhare. Even though the new movie may or may not be a reboot. I think ignoring the original casts especially Edward Mulhare in the movie is kinda tasteless in my book. The way Devon Miles went out in KR 2000 was extremely sour in my mind. It would have been better for him to be shown retiring then to be knock off. Having some kind of tribute would at least put the ending of Mulhare on a much better note. I don't think it would take away from the movie at all in my mind.

If there's going to be a retcon, then you'd need a Devon Miles character. Devon was the bureaucratic knight, fighting on the corporate side. He was the public face of FLAG, whereas Michael was the lone knight that should stay out of the spotlight whenever possible. But how do you sneak in a tribute to Edward? possibly the same way that they did to Bill Bixby in the last Hulk film...show him in a movie on TV, etc...or maybe the Knight estate is located on Mulhare Dr? Something...???

Having no idea what the story line of the movie is. It would be hard to say. If it was up to me. I would have it as a look back maybe have the Micheal Knight in the movie bring up Devon Miles of the past or something. Maybe put it at the end of the movie as a tag as the credits go by. There is many ways you could slip in something like that.

It'd be a complete reboot, I don't think it's at all disrespectful to have someone new take on a role of a character with the same name (possibly some mannerism) especially since there's a strong chance that the character wouldn't be exactly like how Edward Mulhare portrayed him. Even if it was, it really doesn't matter much since the movie wouldn't share any of the continuity of the original series. Now if they did something like that in the 2008 series (which would have no logical reason for doing so) then I would agree.

Custom Kitt - I'm sure you know Mr. Mulhare (or Miles if you will) has passed away for quite some time now. How are you suggesting Edward is to be brought back? Through a different character? I bet it's really hard to find someone of the same caliber as him today. Edward Mulhare was a very handsome British gentleman with a heavy (British) accent and a gustavian type of look. While I agree that Michael (who I prefer to be the Hoff) and Mulhare should have a reunion scenario I know for sure that is not going to happen in this lifetime. First of all, nobody wants the Hoff as Michael Knight anymore which is insane (but bare with me) and second since Mr. Mulhare is long gone there must be someone to replace him, but who? Tom Cruise, give me a break!
PHOENIXZERO, claims that the show would have a complete reboot for any of that to be of question for a story outline, true! The choice of character would again be hard because of reasons I just mentioned and even if they would be successful in finding that character it wouldn't matter since there is no continuity to TOS. All valid points.
Every remake that has been done since the cancellation of TOS back in the late 80's has completely ignored the history and heritage which it was created from. The new series was a complete spit in the face when taking the credit for something that Wilton Knight accomplished 25 years ago! I don't want to turn this into a debate but God knows when I say, anything can be done with a substantial budget. Technically, the Mustang, all the new characters are fine. But the story line is crap and why is that? Because of the budget of course but also the director to some extent. Point being the shouldn't attempt a new series with a low budget, because that would dig a second grave for the entire franchise.

The Best way to honor Edward Mulhare is to never cast someone else in that role. :good:

I think you guys are sorta missing my point. The first reply was more along the lines. A reboot of a show is a reboot of a show. But it does not have to completely ignore it's past either. There have been several shows that move to the movies that sorta did a reboot. The first come to mind is the Bonanza Generations Movie. They implemented the past while allowing new characters and personality's to exist with future events. I could go on and on with different movies. The TV series Knight Rider that went of the air last year. In my book ignored everything Knight Rider. Including using a FORD mustang as The car. Come on a Fix or Repair Daily. It didn't even look like a vehicle that a Knight Rider would use. A Vette would have been much closer and leaps and bounds better. Implementing a Intro such as KR 2000 with a transition from a black car to red car at the very least showed the shows past vehicle. The same can be done with Devon Miles. It's like 007 not saying shaken not stirred

Ahh, but Daniel Craig did exactly "that" in Casino Royale and the movie was still one of the most successful in the Bond franchise.

In the case of Knight Rider you can't just leave those important elements and expect it to be successful. It's too borderline failing if you put the emphasis on the wrong element.

You are not understanding the question. It's how to honor Edward Muhare, and not how to replace him. How to squeeze some recognition to the actor, not the character. The title of the thread really should have been closer to that question. Any reboot would need a Devon Miles. If they get another character to do the things that Devon did in the series, but rename him, then that is an injustice that would not be forgiven.

but.....if we are naming names for who I'd like to see play Devon Miles, then...I think would be a great Devon Miles could be played by Hugh Laurie, in his natural accent. He's old enough to play a respectable (if anything unorthodox) doctor on TV, why not the head of an independent foundation for law and government?

If Michael Caine was younger, I'd say go with him. But you get the point. That kind of built in respectability is what Devon Miles needs.

BTW, you had Q, you had M, you had the majority of what made Bond, Bond in Casino Royale. That's why it worked. It was much darker and closer to reality than the last few movies. People balked at Bond having Blonde hair, remember that? I think most people accept Daniel Craig as Bond, and don't even blink at the thought anymore. He proved that he was more than worthy to be Bond.

Thanks WIBoomer1 for clearing things up.

A thanks for the memories style tribute even if put at the ending credits would be fine by me. Or if it can be done have it implemented somewhere in the movie. I think KR movie has to be respectful of its past as it looks forward. It be like bond no longer having a license to kill.

Edward was an icon in the original show, he couldn't be replaced and a suitable memoriam for such a great character should be established. I thought it was almost an insult the way he was killed off in the KR2000 movie

They could have a large photo of him over a fire place or something and the new character either the new guy playing a Devin role or the guy playing Michael could reference back about the fight that started long ago... or something like that.

Actually, there was no Q in Casino Royale but that's not being discussed here.

What is, is if there should be a bit of honor put toward Edward Mulhare. Yes, that would be great, a moment for the old fans or the really hyper and studious new ones to stop and go "Awwww, we love ya, Devon". Whether it not that will actually do that, who knows. But it would be nice.
