KITTs exhaust

I was watching the episode of Different Strokes where the kids break onto the Knight Rider set. I noticed that the KITT David is driving has dual exhausts. Now I'm wondering, was it just that replica, or did KITT have dual exhausts?
My KITT needs a new muffler, so I have the opportunity to change it now.

Is it possible that only that particular stunt car had the dual exhausts?

The 80's Trans Ams have factory duals, but it's really a one in, two out muffler... meaning it's not true duals in that they don't come from the motor to the back, but from the muffler to the back. That's how it is on our 1982 T/A. :D Lol, just took a peek under our ertl 1:18 Kitt and that's how it is under there too.

Maybe you can help me out. Do you know what size pipes I have? If I ordered a muffler from, say, JC Whitney, what do I order? They have some nice 1 in 2 out mufflers with a nice sound. Any suggestions? I don't want to get too crazy with the price, though.

That's what I was thinking, too. Any idea of the size pipes in and out I need. I'm thinking either 2" or 2 1/4" OD.

Anyone remember Knight of the Drones?Doesn't it show a clear shot of the missile locking onto kitt's single exhaust pipe on the right side before he blows up?

In reference to weither its true duel or just a 1 in 2 out muffler system, it is true duel and that was an option with the 1982 trans am. As far as what style and size, Flowmaster 2 1/4" would be your best bet. i would deff recommend you go with a true Flowmaster exhaust system. The sound you'll have coming out will be outstanding. Good Luck on your build.

A question for everyone out there, does anyone have any info on the convertable set up from season 4, like how it was done and if there is a kit out there to replicate the look? :kittconv:

Hmm, lots of differences of opinion here. So far, I've seen both. Guess it depended on which car was used. The important thing here, I think, is that the tailpipes were dual. I don't think I want to replace my whole exhaust...it's practically new as it is. I found the Flowmaster 80 muffler has the correct 1 in 2 out transverse configuration for my car. I called Midas and they don't carry it but can order it. I found the muffler online everywhere for about $125, but autoanything.com has a 10% discount and free shipping. I'll see what Midas wants for the whole thing, and decide from there.

All Trans Ams had the dual tail pipes. The picture shows the stock exhaust used standard on the Crossfire 82-83, optional on the carbed LG4 82-84. Long discontinued and only available as custom made. It was a single pipe from the cat that branched into 2 that went over the rear axle and connected behind the center pipe between the 2 small mufflers. It had a nice rumble to it.

Your best bet is to replace your exhaust all the way from the cat. You don't want to go cheap on the exhaust pipe either. It will rust out on you in no time if you do; particularly where it bends before going into the muffler.

Man... Seeing that pic again reminds me how I wish they had some kind of shielding under the car, just so we couldn't see how crappy it looked with the dirt and rust.
The new and again improved evil's advertisement is currently too long and too badass to display here. But let's just say that with now 50% more evil, this **** is great! :twisted: :skar:

I decided to go with a Flowmaster 53083, which is what Flowmaster personally recommended when I called them. Now I need pipes that bend 90 degrees, and are 2.5" ID to hook to the muffler. Heartthrob has a Mendrel Bent tailpipe that looks like the right one for each side. The rest of the pipes on the exhaust are brand new, so I don't need to replace them.

Getting a Kit is a great choice... they come mandrel bent (smooth curves) as opposed to crush bends that most muffler shops do (not smooth)...

I think "tail pipes" look nice on some cars, but I did not want to see them on my Kitt... So I went a step further, I got a 3" Flowmaster system, 1 in 1 out, which flows better than the 1 in 2 out most people have... The exit pipe is shorter & I painted it black with heat paint, so it does not stick out and is barely noticeable... My kit came with a 30 series Flowmaster...

Nice job! I was surprised to see KITT had dual exhausts, so I'm trying to emulate it. I've been trying to find a kit for just the muffler and tail pipes. Where did you find yours?

Flowmaster CatBack system... It was about $230 from Summit shipped... Paid to have it installed... I had it installed after I put on my Hooker 2055 Headers / Y Pipe (Jet Hot Ceramic Coated) New Magnaflow High Flow Cat... They also welded in the Spohn SubFrame connectors that day too...

The exhaust KITT has in that picture was a stock setup for an 82. It is a Y pipe coming out of the exhaust manifolds, to a mid pipe, then to the dual mufflers and out the tail pipes. It is not a True Dual system. Just a dual outlet set up.
