Every fanbase has the "fanboys." These are people who take things to a whole new level of unhealthy and genuinely ruin the hobby for everybody else. If your having fun, and others are as well, more power to you whether you report to a Starfleet reserve unit on weekends or not (or don the leather jacket and take your KITT replica to Pizza Hutt like in Benchwarmers). When flamewars over inconsequential stuff goes beyond message boards and invades your personal life, it's gone to far. There are some people I've interacted with who don't really seem to see the line between fantasy and reality as clearly as everyone else. Owning a real KITT I thought I was losing my grip on reality, but there are others out there that make me look as sane as can be. This is a fun little diversion for me and I'm glad to see others feel the same way. I typically don't frequent this board (or the replica boards) that often because my love of this hobby has been severely, but not irreparably, compromised by certain individuals within this community. In fact, as a Trekkie, also, I've dealt with worse individuals in this fanbase than ST.

Reality sucks. Shows with jumping, talking cars are a great distraction but it doesn't need to rule your life. At some point we all have to go back to our mundane lives. As long as we understand that and can come to places like this and talk and interact as rational and emotionally stable individuals then that's all that matters, but like the saying goes, it takes one rotten apple to spoil the bunch and this community doesn't have the greatest reputation because of that.

well, to clarify, the FEDERATION has stopped using currency for most purposes and certainly Earth had completely done away with currency, so Kirk was technically correct. Latinum wasn't so much a currency since (1) it was considered to be more like a valuable processed raw material and (2) there was no standard of exchange, everything was done on a non-standardized barter basis - which is why the Ferengi are a viable race. Also, the Ferengi aren't part of the Federation, although they do trade with Federation members.

More globally speaking, there doesn't have to be money or currency to determine how resources are allocated, there only needs to be trade. Trade probably occurs far more efficiently with materials as opposed to currency in ST world since a standardized currency exchange on that kind of scale is functionally impossible.

But back to ST, I tend to like the politics and trade aspects (but probably because of my chosen vocation and educational background). But then again, there's nothing like photon torpedos and the Borg...
Go back and watch DS9, you'll see that latinum is very much currency. Valuable processed raw material? HELLO GOLD another currency.
Firstly, DS9 is a Bajoran base and Bajor was not a part of the Federation and certainly doesn't trade exclusively within the Federation (remember that Bajor was seeking entry into the Federation during the events of the series). Also, a majority of their trading partners are mostly non-Federation citizens transacting outside of Federation trade economics, therefore the outdating of Federation currency still applies.

Secondly, as I said earlier, Kirk is not in error since they had no even met the Ferengi in his century and latinum doesn't appear to function as currency anywhere except for in the frontier. In fact, they still had chilled relations with anyone outside of the Federation at the time. I don't really

Thirdly, the most prominent examples of latinum being used relates almost exclusively to the Ferengi... again, NOT in the FEDERATION.

You'll clearly see that I stated currency is outdated in the FEDERATION because they have some nebulous economy set up. Apparently putting it in all caps wasn't obvious enough so I'll try this. It seems you're the one who needs to watch DS9... in addition to needing to actually read people's replies before making any sarcastic snarking comments.

Star Trek uses currency still even in the 24th century. Nuff said.

I love Star Trek for what kind of society it represents, where humans and other races can get along no matter what their differences are, and society has fixed the problems that we face today.
I love Knight Rider because of the philosophy behind the show, that "one man can make a difference". I was a kid when the original series was on the air, and I thought that it was a great idea that Michael was trying his best to right wrongs with the help of his super-cool talking car. To help people who couldn't help themselves.

I'd like to think that I've taken the best parts of both shows and incorporated them into my own philosophy on life.

And then at a critical moment in combat his entire dash will explode because of a plasma relay failure! ;)

Thanks Sue for the picture. That was way cool. I'm into Star Trek. I have some toys and books and a TNG uniform. My favorite thing is Doctor Who. Oh and the anti Star Trek series is Blakes 7. Those who post here seem to be less fanatical about KR. Doctor Who fans get get seriously uptight about things. RTD must go now and that type of thing. Right now we're trying to figure out who the next Doctor will be. I believe the next Doctor will be black from what I've heard.

I believe some fans have OCD and they channel it into a fictional universe, sports team, band or celebrity. I think some fans have an issue with OCD and in the long run it takes away from the fun of what they enjoy.

Power surges do that, I don't know about a plasma relay failure.
